The success of Honey Select games at the top of most of the weighted ratings suggests to me that men are generally less shallow than they're given credit for.
Characters that get large fanbases aren't always the most traditionally beautiful, and aggregate good characterization, relatability, and appearance for an overall effect that's greater than the sum of its parts.
By no means do I think that reflects all players, but it certainly (at least anecdotally) seems to describe a plurality.
