I still don't get why the game takes place in the past instead of the present. What is gained? Everything just feels less important knowing it has already happened.

Before you can continue with the present you get the introduction into the characters past. Why? To understand who, why and what. Consider it a prologue.
It's one way to tell a story, in this case it's been told quite well.

it's a trick like any other, which has very little impact apart from the first few chapters. now in the last one we are practically 'live'.

funny that what creates the paradox of the MC being taken out by the killer, but who nevertheless stopped by to say hello to his friend the bartender.... here if there's anything really useless in AVN it's these gameovers that make very little sense.
