Thanks for sharing this Patreon update.Quick Patreon Update -
All,
This is just a quick housekeeping update: I wanted to share a bit about what to expect for content delivery when Chapter 7 goes live.
As Chasing Sunsets has met and exceeded the Mega 5GB download limit for free accounts, and pirate sites have grown increasingly unscrupulous about bandwidth theft, we've been forced to reevaluate options for content distribution that will prioritize your launch day access.
We've identified an S3 cloud host that should offer rapid download speeds globally without inconveniencing players with download limits. In fact, it's live already!
Further, we've partnered withYou must be registered to see the linksto act as our distribution front end for Patreon. Don't worry, this portal works even you do not have an Itch account.
You will notice there is now a single download link in the stickied post and welcome note. This will validate your membership before directing you to a personalized download link:
While we're under no illusion this will have any effect on piracy, it should ensure you're not competing with non-supporters for release day access to the latest content.
We will announce our Subscribestar solution on that site when it is finalized.
We've partnered with Imatag for passive proliferation awareness, but we have no plans to add active DRM, nor will our software ever transmit data (anonymized or otherwise) back to the mothership for any reason. (The sole exception being SteamAPI for Achievements and platform integration.)
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ping us below or in Discord.
Thanks!
Stone Fox Studios
I support via SS so I'll wait for them to provide the SubscribeStar supporters with their solution.
For those on F95 who complain about the speed of development of great AVNs like Chasing Sunsets, this helps to illustrate why content delivery had to slow down.
Stone Fox Studios never said that they were trying to stop the free release of the latest rev of Chasing Sunsets - even though they have a significant free download where they add more of the story to that free download as the content grows.
What they did say is that those who actually support them with $ have the right to download what they paid for First, without competing with those taking bandwidth to download the latest rev for free.
So the devs have had to spend time and $ away from the creation of Chasing Sunsets in order to protect the ability of their paying supporters to download their creation first.
I don't recall seeing anyone who complained about the speed of the development of Chasing Sunsets complaining about this, even though it forces the devs to slow down their AVN development.
I'd call that being a cake eater, but that's just me.
Pirate sites can have bad behavior that threatens their sites (Rule 7 anyone??) and moderators have every right to crush that behavior for the greater good of the site.
Stealing bandwidth does not rise to that level but it can have a longer-term impact far beyond just this thread.
Much like English privateer activity prompted the Spanish to institute convoys protected by armed escorts, Stone Fox Studios has to institute protective measures to guard their Patreon and SS supporters' access to the content they are actually paying for.
They are part of the AVNCU - so obviously they are sharing their findings with every other dev participating in the AVNCU.
Any creator watching trends will also be paying attention to these kinds of activities and noting both their success and the tools they are using.
So expect to see more devs working to protect their creations, whether it is just their download bandwidth or going much further with active DRM.
