I have two saves, top route 100% current content without cheating. Bottom route I cheated a bit for stats once I got to Valos. Bottom route is easily doable, but you are very "underlevel" for Valos. Also, I don't think you can learn lockpicking without going to Hooktown via the north branch. Could be mistake though. It'll be a while before I finish this other playthrough, so there a lot of things I don't know post prologue...

Yeah, the idea is that you make your way to Rathpike (there's a ferry at the south harbor) where the checks are lower.

Lockpicking... If memory serves one of the thieves downstairs in Pliny's hideout in Rathpike can teach you how to pick locks. He's in a corner though:
