Color Of My Sound is a story driven SciFi game. If you like story driven games with a clear focus on the "story" part and much less emphasis on the "sex" or "romance" part (as of now) then this game is absolutely worth your time.
The character design is top shelf, all the female characters look very unique and each is of course exceptionally pretty. Color Of My Sound is a harem game, but what sets it apart from most other harem games is that the potential love interests are all pretty mysterious figures and maybe not entirely trustworthy. You may even dislike a few characters because of their actions. All potential love interests have their own motivations, most of which are still not entirely known.
The MC is a former musician who suffers from a condition that renders all the music he hears into "noise", but now he is a celebrated military hero tasked with finding out more about the "Rebels" who launched a devastating attack on the Empire about a year ago. So the MC is assigned a team of (all female) specialists to uncover more about the Rebels on a planet called "Elysium".
The game may at first be very confusing, since it doesn't really explain anything, things only become clearer as you progress. But especially early on it feels almost like a fever dream. The game begins with the MC after his first major gig with a band, he meets a groupie called June and the two hook up and connect almost immediately.
Then there's a hard transition into the present and the player is bombarded with lots of confusing details like brain implants, a mysterious handler, and there is some exposition thrown in that explains a few things about the world. Dune certainly was a major inspiration for the Empress and the three major noble houses that control the galactic Empire.
Don't let the somewhat confusing start deter you though, things will get clearer as you progress. Still, there are many, many mysteries in the game - all of them pretty intriguing as well. What's the story with June for example? The groupie the MC meets first thing in the game? She keeps popping up in very lucid dreams and she certainly has some major significance. Yet she simply disappears after a night of having sex with the MC, only to appear in those lucid dreams.
Who exactly are the rebels? What game are the noble houses playing? And most importantly: what are the agendas of the various female special ops team members? The game also strongly suggests that a Rebel spy may be among the team.
The strength of the game is its exceptional visuals, especially the character design stands out. Another huge plus is that the potential love interests are all very unique and quite three dimensional and what makes it even more interesting is that it's not entirely certain if all of them are even trustworthy. Chances are of course that all of the potential love interests will eventually become loyal romantic partners if the MC makes the right decisions, but it will certainly not be an easy route as in so many other harem games where the love interests often jump on the MC at the first opportunity.
Color Of My Sound is very light on sexual content, there are only three or four scenes in the entirety of chapter 1 (you can play through it in one somewhat longer session). Also, the scenes are not animated. But the static renders are really good and quite frankly, most standard 2 second loop animations are not that great to begin with, so the fact that you only get static renders here should not keep you from playing this game. There are quite a lot of renders in this game and I think most people won't really miss the standard animations.
So what you do get is lots of renders for things like talking, eye movements, the characters emote, in many ways Color Of My Sound, despite the lack of animations, is a more "animated" experience than many other games which often feature one static render for several lines of dialogue. Here the characters feel a bit more alive because of things like mouth and eye movement.
The game also has no music or sound, which may surprise some because of the title of the game, but apparently this absence of music and sound has a story reason, since the MC has some deep trauma that prevents him from mentally processing music. Apparently sounds and then music will be added as the story progresses. But for now the game is a silent experience.
Color Of My Sound, while a bit confusing at first, is certainly one of the best story driven SciFi games currently in development. And as mentioned character design is top level, those are some of the most attractive characters in any game, ever. The central story is packed with mystery and even though it's a harem game it's not a shallow or superficial game at all.
People who want more action between the characters may be disappointed though. So you need some patience here. This is definitely a story driven slow burn. There are also no kinks to speak of, the two major sex scenes are all pretty much romantic and vanilla - without any choices. Depending on your own preferences this may be a plus or a negative for you, I appreciate the approach here.
Also, if you want lots of choices or branching paths then Color Of My Sound may not be entirely your thing, there are some choices, but mostly for flavor. You can reject sex once or twice, but it has no real consequences, so for now at least chapter 1 mostly plays like a kinetic novel.
However, if you like story driven slow burn games with a SciFi setting and if you are ok with the game having few actual choices then Color Of My Sound will grab your attention and keep you engaged. This game has a good chance of becoming one of the very best with future updates, even without animations. It's certainly off to a promising start. Just get through the somewhat confusing beginning even if you may feel a bit overwhelmed and confused by the abrupt tonal shift once the scene with June ends.
