i still like the old art more as well, looks more hm.. drawn, which i prefer. couldn't explain what exactly it is.

I think the crux of the discussion about the art style was that the old art almost felt like it was trying to emulate the older pokemon art style, not quite matching it but feeling like it. And since Nintendo put the kibosh on that game, the devs here might have felt like they suddenly had a bit more freedom to do what they wanted with various characters.
At the end of the day, liking the art styles is going to come down to personal taste, but from where I'm looking at it, the new art style is great, definitely a step forward and it feels more in line with the tone of the revised game.
