I seem to be having an issue with the mushroom quest because, when I go to the field, I can't collect the one I need.

I know, but I have that option turned off. I have only seen her in that mode a few times, maybe twice. I remember someone posting an image showing Gwen's tsundere mode a while ago.
You need to go to Asteria's realm and train with her. She will make you, as my old dance teacher liked to say, "Strong like bull."
IIRC, you can find a book which someone has left in Lily's bar, and reading that will increase your charisma.
Just to elaborate, you can only find it in act 2 when you move to the manor, and only if you go to the bar in the mornings.

Yeah, it can be turned off but why the hell is it on by default? There really should be a warning in the OP.
You have to convince her to sell.
Then talk to Jessica (work) and visit them again (meet hubby).
Then talk to Jessica (manor, kitchen) then select her again.
If Jessica (work) doesn't work, maybe they all start in the kitchen of the manor. (don't remember)

I do love this game, but there is one rather amusing bug I have had, not sure if others have had it, but somehow I've got two versions of the Eldrich... or whatever the purple lead is. One tells me to go talk to Chastity, the other tells me... go talk to chastity. Sometimes it tells me different. I don't know HOW I ended up with two of these... but there ya go.
Any chance we get to dom asteria in the future?
