But why though? How is what he did any different than the dozens of Naruto, Disney, or whatever your preferred game is? Seems like the owners of those IPs would have a lot more pull then some random koikatsu creator (no offence intended).
You're not wrong, but why tempt fate? While it's true that a random character creator on the internet doesn't have much pull legally speaking, especially in this context, you likely know how overly protective people can be of their creations... even if they have, by now, been shared on the internet for anyone to see/use. People will sue each other over the slightest thing these days, so why not just nip that in the bud and change the characters now before he faces bigger, unnecessary issues down the road?

I mean I dont see how they would have an especially strong case for that (in the US at least) given that the character was probably designed on a illegally gained version of the software (like from this site). True people will sue over anything these days, but lawyers do cost a fair amount of money and I just dont see the ROI being there in this case.

Thing is the only people that own any characters made with Koikatsu is Illusion. If they really wanted to be asshats all the ppl selling character cards could be shut down. They aren't like Metallica in '99 though, they aren't gonna alienate their fanbase for minimal profit.

Wow thank you for the really detailed response. I plan to read through it more thoroughly but one more question. Why would the parody argument not work in this case? Arc could for instance say that the characters behave differently in his game than they do in the original creation (like Chloe for instance ).
I follow a few other creators like Akabur who use a lot of different IPs in there games so im just wondering if this is something we are likely to see a lot more of, or if this case is different for some reason.

Out of curiosity did you use a cheat (Ren'Py Console, Save Editor, Mod) to edit the love values? As that is clearly out of range with 5 being the highest.

While I don't really use Android here is an idea, put the file it wants where it wants it
Android/data/com.domain.corruptedkingdoms/files/game/
gui/cards/cc_love_99.png

To be honest it would be better to fix the love values as this will probably cause you to miss events
Thanks it was the love Stat I raised it too much but now it's back to normal.

Parody, Fair Use, and the Public Domain are fun topics. Now if you make enough transformative work it could make it.
Custom modding takes time and doesn't just fall into Illusion corporate hands even if the artist did use Koikatsu. That would be like arguing all art that was made in Photoshop is owned by Adobe or MSPaint creations by Microsoft :ROFLMAO:. Disney has worked hard to rip off the Brothers Grimm but you get other knockoffs because Disney doesn't own the original characters, only the changes they themselves made.

However legally defending that is the question. Non-Profits have the excuse they didn't make money which a For-Profit couldn't use. Slightly changing a few things might not be enough and seeing what the courts say is a financial gamble.

Arc didn't change Chloe's art model and he just put her in cute poses. He included her in the $5 tier wallpapers, $10 tier Character Cards, and possibly higher tier 'custom' scenes so selling those assets and not paying royalties to the original creator for the profits he made off their work.

If you want a funny transformation work try the porno Nintendo officially owns, Super Hornio Brothers. Nintendo couldn't do anything legally so they just bought it.

Firstly, the Nintendo fact is fucking hilarious an i'm defiantly stealing that bit of trivia.
Secondly, does the whole Patreon business model not circumvent the royalties issue? I would think the creators could argue that the games that they are developing are "free" and the money they make is basically a tip jar. This may be a slightly off topic example, but you dont really expect record labels to be suing street performers for royalties.

Ah I see your point but a few things.
1 - Just because it's free doesn't mean it's not copyrighted. If you took a photograph you technically own it since it was your creation. If I took that off your facebook page and made a shirt of it I would be infringing on your copyright as while you might have released it for free, me making it into a shirt infringes on your rights unless you gave me permission to use it. The difference comes when money is involved as shouldn't you make money off your work if I am?
2 - I expect record labels to be retarded. History is muddled with fun events like a small barber shop getting sued for playing the radio, street performers have been sued if there is enough money involved, bars getting sued for having mechanical music boxes, and so on. I swear almost every technological innovation had some doomsayer saying it was the end of the world.

Well I guess it is time I weigh in my thoughts as well on this version. I also hate the new models. I honestly can't stand them now. They were so hot before and now...just no. I can't stand to look at them now, so I think I am done with this game if this is how they will be going forward. It is just too uncomfortable for me to continue. It has been fun but I guess for me this journey ends here or rather in v 6.9. Was interesting story but oh well, good luck to the dev though in future endeavors.

He did say in the changelog that he was open to feedback. Hope is not lost yet.

Well the only way I think would be to fix it is to revert back to the old models. Yes I know about the issue about it something about belonging to other artists, but I am wondering can't he make some deal with said artists then? Something similar to how a dev would do if he commissioned an artist to do the models for him in the first place. That might allow him to move forward with the old models and still keep most of his fanbase for the game.

I do not enjoy the redesigns. I think how they were designed before were perfect ! I've been following the creation of this game closely since 0.1 so its sad to see especially Morgana look so different. Then later on, my favourites of Jessica, Madison, and Gwen took some of the charm away with this update. I don't think its a "culture shock" effect from first glance, I believe that it was much better before and I hope this helps with some input!

Around 200 responses from folks around here and on Arc's discord.

I'm just worried these ratings mean Qarinah's face will stay the way it is... Hopefully, something below 6 might be taken as "could use further tweaking". Can you tell me, for those who gave criticism about her in the comments, were they about face, clothes, or other?

There's clearly a bit of law of big numbers going on here, with everything trending towards "meh, it's alright" due just to the volume of feedback. I'm not surprised that there was actually clear consensus that Alexa and the Caretaker were bad, but am surprised at the consensus that Samantha and the Pool Twin's were improvements. I mean, I agree, I'm just surprised they made it into the 7's.
