As historically plausible as your average Hollywood movie.
In a world with magic an easy cop out is that black powder is unstable around magic. Sure you can mix up a batch, if you don't mind losing your eyebrows immediately.

I think it's the face, or more specifically the eyes, at least for me. There's something about them that doesn't fit with the rest of the art.
