Strictly speaking, why would you need to replace them? None of the companions have any story importance. There's no real reason to replace a companion if you get rid of one.
He's just a normal NPC now, with a story arc - he's not any more of a dead end than any other NPC.

Tried my luck at X and found a profile and a link to a mega folder, with six Berwyn fics, three of them in the CoC2 universe and the other three in modern day universe, none of them were the fabled butcher ending and I have no other clues. Maybe it was deleted at some point
