Now, if you just look at the google dictionary meaning, the word has been used properly. Except if you delve slightly below surface level, you'd be hard pressed to find this specific synonym of accept not used in extremely formal and political matters.
Obviously there's nothing wrong with busting out the thesaurus and fishing for synonyms to avoid repetitiveness in creative writing. I do it all the time. But by God, if it's a really obscure one, at least check examples of where and how it is typically used. There are some words that are mostly seen in politics but have some fringe use in mundane writing, such as the word unilateral, yet for the most part you want to avoid misusing lingo where it just doesn't fit.
