My wisdom is to take this 4K proposal and put it aside until you're near the end of the game and are thinking about releasing a final version with all the graphical/text fixes and any scenes additions you'd like to make.
This way you'll save yourself the trouble of doing this work now, while technology continues to advance and it's more than likely that by then a 4K file will be 1/10 of what it is now.

My suggestion regarding a 4K version is to not do it at all, but to offer the unedited 4K images as a separate download, or preferably as a list of separate downloads. (Preferably in ZIP files, not RPA files, because a lot of people don't know how to extract RPA.) E.g. one ZIP file per update or one per game day. This would already be a lot of added value for some players, with little additional effort. IMO, the images needn't even be renamed to the final naming scheme, although doing so might make it easier to ensure that nothing is missing.
  • Moreover, once the unedited 4K images are available, someone might well find the time to edit them to get them in the same state as the 1080p images (possibly using an efficient AI workflow taking the unedited 4K image and the edited 1080p image as input, plus a little bit of fixing up).
  • And someone else might create a 4K patch for the game that makes it use the 4K images properly -- maybe even selectively only for those days for which the 4K images have been dropped into the game folder.
That way, two motivated users (or small teams) with very different skill sets could create the 4K version in a rational way as a tiny code patch plus separate downloads for the edited images. For minimal additional developer effort (only collecting the images and finding a way to efficiently publish lots of huge files, which might even be done by private file transfer to yet another volunteer), this would ultimately result in a playable community-supported 4K version. (Whether that's a good strategic decision is of course for Cosy to decide, but I suspect that it would be.)

The thought of playing this game from anything other than the start is just ludicrous to me .
But that's just me ! :D:D
Well it depends, I have already replayed the game from the beginning not that long ago so It's good to have the option in case he has to push an update that requires us to restart.
Still, I could totally see myself restarting the game at some point next year, I really enjoy how the story is in the earlier parts.

I have a technical argument against 4K version. Recently I purchased a tablet with Intel N100 CPU to be able to play my favourite VNs and other stuff not leaving my bed. And I discovered a very interesting issue specific to the RenPy engine - . Meaning even if your GPU is capable of playing high quality videos, if your CPU is not at least i5 you will get performance problems. I've noticed some VNs were extremely laggy during animated scenes (thankfully not Cosy Cafe) and my CPU simply peaked at 100% during that. And on my 13-inch screen I wouldn't notice any difference anyways (never noticed on my 27-inch desktop display before). So basically 4K version will cut off users with weaker/older computers, users with slow/limited internet connection without any noticeable visual improvements.

well if you think about it there is many people that will have hardware limitations starting with no wanting to download something over 10Gb over dsl or even wifi 5 or even 6 id it takes more than 10 min its too much.

for now for most I think 720p or less is standard , 1080 is HD
above that most monitors are way below this spec

this forum supports questions you could open a voting to see how many people will be interested.
but even its available how many will actually download the big version? that is anyone's guess I would keep it 1080p maybe a little bigger but with good compression ratio. maybe over time adapt some others, but would not make it a priority

I don't think you are the target audience when he asked that question also it is something he would do in addition to our current one, so it's not like he will cut off users since they will still be able to access the normal version, the key question here is if there is enough people that would like that for him to put the effort or not.

Meanwhile, I finished my third playthrough of the game this year just a little under a week ago... The third of which, by the way, I started about two or three months at most after finishing the second. I kid you not! I am full blown addicted, pal! o_O

Well that's true that 4K will be as an addition to an usual version, but it still takes time to make. And I just wanted to warn that there are a lot of devices with high resolution screens that don't have enough juice to run RenPy's 4K games - like my tablet having 2880x1920 with a weak hardware compared to my 2560x1440 monitor on powerful desktop. And many people don't even know/understand their hardware specs so they will simply download "the best" version and be disappointed. That's actually gives me a thought - maybe 2K version would be a good compromise to make?

Dev said it was for PC only, not for android.

You underestimate the intellect of PC users :HideThePain:
Not really, but i dont see the appeal of putting a 100GB game on a tablet with 128GB of space. Someone can crunch it, yes, but the pictures and UI would be bigger than the screen can display. sidenote: we have almost the same PC, just have 128GB RAM and Linux Mint

android is mainly used in tablets and phones but its not exclusive to it, you can run it on any PC if you wanted to like any other Linux OS.

Cosy Creator Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed discovering this game a few weeks ago and am now very sad to have finally caught up! This has been one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I've had on here. The story hooked me as the writing is excellent and you continued to surprise me with how each love interest has grown so far and their backstories. I particularly loved the recent Catherine backstory and I'm pretty hyped for both her and Hannah becoming official as that will be quite the web to untangle! Plus, other wildcards like Rachel, Akari, Annabelle, and Elizabeth, and how they all end up joining in. Can't wait to see how it all plays out! You've got another subscriber right here!
