You dont need to grind that much, there are battles you are forced to lose, also at the end u can grind a lot of exp after you are granted the demon powers.

I think this is a problem with the compressed version of the game. The overlay is supposed to be transparent so you can actually see underneath, but compression of images removes the transparency.

Get a working copy of the game.
