When momoko and mother are in the living room and she is sleeping, go to kitchen, call for mom. Leave kitchen and go back to living room (no action in kitchen).

Go to your room and click on "More Actions". When you do, there will be an option to read a book, then just click that and choose which book you want to read if you have any.
