And he's not "raping" her or anything like it. Sure, he doesn't always respect her boundaries, but we would expect that such boundaries would be informal among family members. In Chapter Two, if I remember, he presses his face against her bosom, hugs her tightly, and palms her butt. She seems unbothered by this. Now compare that to chapter eight when a stranger palms her--her rejection is immediate, even before her son "rushes to the rescue." What's great about her son's character is that it's in stark contrast to her personality. Daval is obviously trying to portray her as a moral, demure, upstanding wife and mother (though I would say that her dialogue specifically can use some work, i.e. her 18-year old like "cussing.") The point of their dynamic is that she's set in her outward denial of her being physically attracted to her son, and her son is portrayed to be a bit more than just sexually attached to her, especially in his jealousy toward his father, his frequent attempts to kiss her, and his physically accosting the stranger who attempted to harass his mother. Daniel's likeable because he's aggressive toward his modest mother. While not "original," there are some tropes that just work regardless of how many times they're reused.
