I have this exact issue too (well, in addition to all my woes), but I find personally it's the hardest light/ effect to create without washing out an entire side of the subject - or even lighting the 'correct' side/ edge/ horizon as my renders prove

A buddy and me decided to cooperate on a crossover between our favourite VN, Leap of Faith, and our favourite nerd franchise containing lightsabers.
He voluntarily went for the light side characters and i do the sith. didnt even had to force choke him. guy is no fun sometimes...

Anyway, first of the Sith characters:
