Well, 18 is, by the way, a totally arbitrary age. I presume it was set in accordance with the school cycles. In the 70's in italy adult age was still 21, just to say. In ancient Rome the age in which a girl could get married away was 12, if i don't recall wrong and even today in Rom culture (romenian nomads) the usually marry at 14.

It's curious how it became some sort of sacred unquestionable legal age in wester world. I, for once, since life expectance grew and dumb kids age stretched quite a lot, i would be in favor of setting it back to 21.

I don't know how much science/psychology is behind it, but the school aspect of it probably has something to do with it to some degree and life expectancy increases has certainly played a role. Anyone not mature enough to be considered an adult at 21 will never be mature enough to be an adult; people thought I was mature enough in my mid teens. Every human is a little different, but innate intelligence and nurture play a significant role.

As for age of consent and other things, I know that has had the biggest changes in the last 50ish years. As recently as 1957 Jerry Lee Lewis legally married his 13 year old cousin. It didn't go over well for him career-wise, but it wasn't uncommon to marry that young in certain parts of the US at that time, but it also wasn't exactly encouraged. There are still states where you can marry in your mid-teens with parental consent.

Did some googling about this: It's pretty arbitrary and sources conflict a lot. Some said because of WW2 and the draft, others because of voting. The US making 18 the age and it's position in the world led to it spreading and become de facto. Due to laws around it no company will touch anything with even a hint under 18 the penalties are extremely severe. They don't care if you say this fictional person is 18, any hint of crossing the law is forbidden.

It’s not; it’s just a sacred unquestionable age in puritanical America, and everyone else has to put up with it. The restricted age of consent in most of Europe is either 15 or 16—restricted usually just meaning that one party cannot be in an obvious position of power over the other (e.g. legal guardian, schoolteacher). It’s also 16 in Canada and in most of Australia. (Unrestricted age of consent seems to be 18 mostly everywhere.)

Honestly, I agree.

It seems strange that people are considered old enough to fuck (and therefore possibly get pregnant and fuck up their lives) but not old enough to drink. I understand that alcohol interferes with brain development in a way that sex (presumably) does not but it also comes down to understanding consequences and commitment to these consequences.

And yes, 18 is completely arbitrary. Either 16 (14?) or 21 would make just as much sense, and of these I'd be in favour of 21, for reasons above.

However, for some reason, when I read that, particularly in the context of this AVN, it reminded me of something from either Caligula or I, Claudius (been a very long time ago). When the brutality that can be part of this AVN is taken into account, and while this could and should never be an onscreen thing, there was a scene where the Emperor was telling a group of soldiers to kill a perceived traitor and his family; the centurion (well, some leadership level of soldier) asked about the children - the emperor replied yes, and reminded the soldier that it was bad luck to kill virgins, so to assure that they didn't. Sick shit, but I think recently playing the "ravaging" scene made me think that this is something the Queen would be capable of suggesting since ravaging is seemingly part of the culture.

Drinking age in Texas was 19 when I was young; I turned 19 and then they changed the law to 21 with no grandfather clause - a bunch of 19 year olds bought a lot of booze that August 31st and the days leading up. It was all in response to the Feds withholding highway funds if a state didn't do it, and Texas caved because, well, we probably have more federal highways than any other state in the US and probably drive more (paying more fuel taxes) than any other state, and we wanted to get our money back.

The draft was still technically around at the time and you were eligible at 18; if you can get drafted and get shot at, then you are old enough to decide if you want a beer.

Hot Sand of Antarctica is the first one that comes to mind.

I agree! This game is close, but can't tough Stalker. However, it does have legs and it could be a nice filler in between the Stalker updates. I found it hot and Hot Sands is pretty much the He-Man to Stalkers Conan the Barbarian.
