Thanks for actually asking! instead of assuming based on some random download metrics. This is the way game dev should be run!

As an apparently niche OS user, I also appreciate the competent packaging of the game releases into their own independent folder with the correct executable bits set. You would think it's obvious, but a good 30% of game devs don't get it right, so thanks for not fucking it up.

I would also advocate for a compressed / lower resolution option being available. I like those sleek renders... but I am watching this on a plain 2HD laptop. Such pixel goodness is wasted on me, and all hosting solutions (including itch.io) choke on such large downloads. I would actually suggest, if you don't want to compromise, to offer a torrent version by default.

Is it possible to change my mind and enable the Shani solo content option now that I'm in the latest chapter? I don't want to start a new game just for that alone.
there are mods that enable to mess with any game variables, but i think it's safer to start over.

RenPy, Steam and other musings.
Hi everyone, Paz here.
TL;DR: We probably have to migrate to a new RenPy version, poll link at the end.
As you may (or may not) know, we have been slowly gearing up for an eventual Steam release of Desert Stalker. While the actual release is probably a good few months away, there are a lot of things to be done beforehand and a fair bit of planning ahead.
This involves things not directly related to the game itself, things like setting up business accounts, store page, making promotional material, getting reviewed, etc. etc.
It's a slow process but we're chugging along. One thing that an eventual Steam release provides an opportunity for, is reworking the codebase, something that we discussed for a few reasons:
  • There are a bunch of underlying systems that were slowly developed throughout the last couple of years that could definitely do with a touch-up now that we have a clearer idea of how those systems should work and how they interact with each other. For instance, the quest log system was not built to have multiple concurrent or optional steps and whenever we wanted to add something like this, it had to be done in a "hacky" way to maintain save compatibily.
  • In order to support Steam integration, potential achievements or other things ranging from mandatory to nice-to-have, we need to revisit various parts of the code, so it provides a nice opportunity for cleanup and housekeeping.
  • The last and probably most important reason is RenPy itself. Desert Stalker is built with RenPy 7.5.3 which will become end-of-life as of this month (May 2024). That means no new features or bugfixes, which might not be an issue right now but could become one in the future, and we would prefer to be a bit future-proof. Moving to RenPy 8 is something that will eventually need to happen so this opportunity is as good as any.
Now, there is a slight issue with this last point. RenPy 8.x only supports 64-bit releases, and future versions of RenPy intend to only support Windows 10 and later, dropping support for Windows 7.
My suspicion is that there is quite a good number of players that would be affected, but I want to make sure.
So, in order to have a bit more informed view on the matter and see what the best course of action is, there's a link to a poll below about which OS you're playing Desert Stalker on. It also includes MacOS options due to versions after Catalina requiring apps to be notarized, but that is a lesser point.
Anyway, here's the link and apologies for the wall of text:
And of course, if you have any questions regarding the above, let us know.

See you tomorrow for the usual devlog!

Thanks for the share!

This makes a lot of sense, especially with the planning and execution to get a Steam release out there.

This feels like we may need to do a full restart once the 'under the hood' changes are completed.

I was actually going to go with a brand new playthrough once we got the next rev (due to all the early reworked content) but now I think I will hold for these changes.

Cheers!! :coffee:

The (local) church has kept pretty good records in many cases. I can trace my family back to around 1400. It can, however, be tricky to access these records. Church records (as well as civil records) don't really count the amount of stillborn babies, only those who survived until baptism (or civil registration).

But even in 1800 medicine was still pretty primitive.

Have a look here:

and here:

You'll notice the curve going down around 1850 and then more sharply after about 1920.

If you count my example, then you have an "official" infant mortality rate (not counting stillborns) 0-5 years of 2 out of 5, so 40%, which is very close to (even a bit under) above linked graph.

I think he meant it in a different way :ROFLMAO:
Pretty much.
They used to merry as early as 14-15 years old back in the day and they started having child much early (say as early as 16 - 18 in some cases) and if a woman didn't have children by her mid-late 20's she was considered an "old lass" (not sure if they had the term elsewhere, but) technically the attitude was much the same as it is now towards women in their late 30's by some "red pill coaches" and shit. :p

Everyone are talking about the "Baby boomers" as if they decided to start having lots of kids all of a sudden, when in reality it's the other way around.

This was always the norm until that moment and what changed was that children suddenly topped dying at the same high rate.

patreon ban step-cest too
Hmm actually yes, but was that always the case? Back in 2017, even "incest" was not on the guidelines.
I think the guidelines were redacted in 2024. And then DS was banned and unbanned.

I just now played this game. I had no idea such a cool game existed so far. I am a Fallout game player myself and the idea of a new perspective with a Fallout parody game placed in Egypt is a very good one. The graphics immersion could be better, with more high resolution images and more realistic characters, but it is good for now, as I don't known about the developer's gear limitations. I just want to understand why Zahra model has a so similar physical looking with Mia Khalifa?
