People tried to use the "you're not a true artist" argument when photographers started having gallery showings and auctions for their work. The underlying principle was, "You didn't actually 'create' anything, you just captured an image of what already existed.". As far as AI, yes, I'll agree that there is less creative "talent" being applied (e.g., painting, drawing, sculpting, etc.), but that doesn't diminish that creative "vision" was applied to the final product. That same fear and condescension is the reason electronic music is looked down on by 'true' musicians that physically play instruments versus artists that program electronic instruments and computers. My understanding was that they use AI and brush up on it. Imo you can't say you're a true artist if you need to use AI, even as a placeholder, to create new artwork and assets. It's like the devs of Clair Obscure Expedition 33 using AI placeholder assets while saying they have artist who create art. You don't use AI to create artwork and assets if you have artists who's jobs it is to create art, but thats just me.
There are many descriptions of what "art" is. One popular one is "Art is the creation of something beautiful from nothing.". If that statement is true, then creation through AI 'is' art because the final output was based on a prompt the user thought up. Personally, I understand peoples' aversion to AI. The underlying fear is removing the 'tactile' (hands on) human element from creation. However, AI is a tool created by humans, just as a paint brush, a canvas, film, digital instruments, sculpting tools, et al, are also tools for creation. The "art" is from the creative vision of the artist. The 'talent' is from how well the artist uses tools. With AI, you can have both. An artistic vision and skilled use of the AI software and prompting.
I've seen some AI creations that couldn't exist if not produced through AI software. I'd hate to live in a world where those creations wouldn't exist just because someone deemed them unworthy based on uninformed sentiments and poor logical reasoning.
...but what do I know? I'm just here to get my dick hard.
