Yes, it was active for a couple of years and was closed in 2022 (officially, due to staff overwork).
Right after closure, they started talking about making offline version of the game and now it's in the active development, after years of teasers.

staff overwork.... so theres 1-3 staff working there?
Allegedly, only 1 (one) person handled pretty everything at that point.
Obviously, a successful gacha surely could hire more people instead of waiting for one dude to collapse. That's why I don't think that we know the entire story. Well, that's a history at this point.

I've been seeing stuff about a WWX patch for the game, is that to be found anywhere? Or are we all waiting for the offline version?

WWX Edition is on Sukebei, as it have been for years.
At this point of time, I do recommend waiting for official offline version release. From all we know so far, it should almost completely supercede my work.

I don't think they mentioned the release window yet.
They moved from feeding occasional tweets for years to the proper announcement page and development notes a couple months ago.
I assume we get it somewhere in late 2026.

Actually, Winkel, they did mention the release window for the Japanese release.
They said that they're aiming to release it between Q4 of 2025 and Summer of 2026.

Ah, yeah, I forgot they had that in the announcement article.
Summer 2026 does fit in line with the feel I got from their development articles so far.

Is this the preferred version to play or the original? If I'm gonna just play one.

There's no preferred version. This and original are two separate games, each having a different variant of the story.
If I would choose to play one, it would be original. A lot of people prefer it's story and character development and I personally think you need the meta knowledge of original story to properly enjoy the Gold.
Best argument for Gold would be improved battle system (the game is harder than original if you playing on Very Hard, but both games are still pretty easy, in general).

Is the original not that good for gameplay? I'm contemplating these games primarily for the gameplay, so I want a legitimately fun gameplay loop and not even looking to fap.

Strictly gameplay wise Gold has re-balanced battle system, difficulty levels (though we added difficulty levels through fan patch for original game), more endgame "hard" encounters.
So, if you only care about gameplay, you should try Gold.
But, personally, I wouldn't pick these games just for gameplay. Like it will probably be a slog rushing through early/mid game until you reach challenging encounters in the endgame (which are not that hard even on maximum difficulty).

In another news, another update by the Remake team

Apparently, there were heavy changes suggested by the Game Testers AND there will be a Demo in the future.

It’d be awesome if the new game had a multiplayer territory-control mode — and if not, at least an arena PvP mode

You are a couple years late for PvP arena.
They explicitly mentioned re-designing Arena events for single player, so PvP won't be an option.
