I think it's basically the effect. Daz being more photorealistic treads closer to reality, so you judge it more by real-life standards, and a lot of what's done with it is not close enough to pass those standards. HS on the other hand, as you said, looks more cartoonish, so your mind doesn't judge it by those same standards, and it looks fine.
Yeah, specially cause I don't play these games looking for something that mimics reality, nor ressembles it
So defining as an "uncanny" feeling towards it sounds about right

On Patreon or SubscribeStar. I don't remember if they are subscriber-only content, but they might be; the last one was posted on Sept 30th. However, Caribdis also posts sneak peeks and progress bar every now and then (he ha spromised the last batch of 0.8 sneak peeks tomorrow)
Tomorrow? Fuck yeah

It really depends on style what artist use. In DAZ many devs just put random assets and never think about overall look. That's why you get uncanny valley feel, because you see photorealistic character, but background is full plastic looking assets. It's same for HS if you put character to photorealistic background. You can't mix completely different approach, but some elements. Final Fantasy is great example using realism with anime style looking characters.
