Wasn't trying to insist that its a game, I do believe its more than that, but I was just trying to explain it in the way its been mostly portrayed so far. We haven't been given an explanation yet as to what Eternum really is beyond "just a game". Sure the MC's party has seen shit to say otherwise, but we still don't know whats really going on besides they thought they were just playing a game originally. I do believe technology plays a bigger role than what others have said though. Right now we have technology mixed with magic. Nova's hacks still work even if the results are difficult and limited in their use. Keep in mind she doesn't have the inside knowledge that say an investor or business partner to Ulysses might have like that guy who showed us the NPC control device. Also, even Caly speaks of a "world of machines" and a means of using "artifacts of metal and light" when she first heard of hacking thinking it was magic. Not sure why you insist on theorising as though Eternum is just a digital game, a bunch of code. Hasn't Caribdis given us enough foreshadowing that it's not? If Nova can hack a visor to steal a person's inventory at launch but can't once they're inside the game or even modify any single variable, that means something is off. What they've programmed has so far been foreshadowed as being accessing other worlds while maintaining a link to the Earth to prevent death, as well as installing exit gates. There's more of course, such as NPCs having chips just like players, or physical activity in Eternum resulting in consequences in the real world.
We can also see the 10 gems of doom floating around Calypso's ancestor, giving him the ability to use magic apparently. With Calypso being clearly unhappy with being seen as merely a tool, the chips, the reprogramming and whatever else, it's clear that she's her own person. Meaning that she and the gems of doom far predate the creation of Eternum's chips. And seriously, inability to even take screenshots in a game where you can have tons of different outfits in many types of worlds? No DM-ing while in-game or any such usual commodities found in any MMO? No character screen in-game to check level, stats, equipment or inventory? There isn't even a tutorial for new players! No in-game images on the net (as revealed in a conversation with Penelope). Why don't the devs have images of their own game?
You can't properly theorise if you continue with the assumption that it's just digital code. The game has abundantly made it clear that something's fishy and you'd need crazy infrastructures to support such vast amounts of data, yet there's no such thing back on Earth, and no way to modify any variable "in-game", not even for a hacker who can get access to a very secure server or remotely hack a secure casino computer in record time to feed it false info.
My point with Caly, was that she still has her memories/personality of being real which was a result of being "incomplete" as the MC says when she's released. I think they were trying to change/control her with the box artifact, whether you want to think of that as via technology or magic. I think its both, technology enabling magic that the user doesn't have the capacity to use on their own. As for things not matching what one would expect from an MMO type game, well the game's tagline is "more real than real". Its passed off to the general public by the devs as just a game that has incredible immersion and realism, so much so that you might not question it was a game. If general players questioned the lack of such standard things you mentioned, then no one would believe its just a game. We know better because we're seeing things from the MC's perspective. The average player wouldn't even think about it and would just play.
Your last remark about "remotely hack a secure casino computer in record time to feed it false info." is exactly what I would call modifying variables "in-game". I don't recall it ever being mentioned it was remote, she was right there staring at the computer when it happened. Every other hack we've seen Nova do has been done when outside the game except for that one.
