More or less, depending on where you are, you'll grow up with certain roots from another country.
But there's the whole issue of being African American for being "black". Black is usually shorthand for Haitian, Jamaican, S. African... It can go on, but it's a big issue with roots in how America was birthed in genocide and slavery and made deals with people to see who caught the short end of the slavery stick.
Nowadays, people in America decimated their roots or try to harken back to them if their family is new and that can cause them to yearn for family roots as you see.
So Irish, Scots, and other poor nationalities (Italians and such) birth people that now have those roots while Asians (Vietnamese, Laotians, Chinese, etc.) do the same thing.
I could do an entire anthropological thing, but this is the gist of the issue.
