This fixed it for me too, old renpy works perfect, I never had problems with the previous releases

Saves are not working, downloaded older version as newer ren'py wasn't working. Is this a bug that will be fixed or it's permanent and players have to start over again?

Yes, saving in different versions does not work. Just start week 3 over again.
