External hard drives are more prone to failing then internal ones.
What you need is BACKUPS.
whether the backups are internal or external is irrelevant.
Although it is a good idea to also have offsite backup in case of a fire, flood, thieves, or powersurge

i believe the answer to this problem is a server and backup to said server that's is what i do for all my work (note this server is a private use one i made my self i do not trust google with my works)
Just write the game code on paper too so you dont lose it so easily lol

backing up all your files to a home server is good.
but you should then also backup that server to a different site. whether it is a server at a relative's house, or a corporation (encrypt before sending the files. such as with kopia.)
that way if your home catches on fire, you don't lose everything
