There are 12 places in the game where MC can hide a Letter. Only 1 of them will trigger the quest to
progress, and it’s randomly selected the moment the first letter is put in one of the hiding places. With a bit
of luck you can find the right one before checking them all, but since Scott can give you 3 letters every day,
in the worst case you can solve this part of the quest in 4 days, as long as you know where the hiding places
are.

I'm baffled by your being baffled. Nicole's only role in the Christmas update is to help untangle the Christmas lights. Summon her in your room using the zipper and click the Tangled Christmas lights on her to convert them into Untangled Christmas Lights.
Irene's role comes in after Meredith is in her Santa outfit and gives you a monologue about gift-giving. See Irene to get the "back massager" gift to give to Meredith.
You will only see Meredith using her new vibrator if you have the "Good Vibrations" perk, which you receive after finishing the Christmas content (you'll know if you have done so because MC has a giant stereo system in his room).
If your game is truly in a messed up state, post it here and I'll see if I can "rescue" it for you.
You'll need a garden hose and a nearby source of water.

spmewhere (I think in the walkthrough, in the Christmas part) it says to get the with Irene to get the vibrating machine you had to get the clue from Nicole. I've done the untangle thing already, but as I said there was no scene with Meredith decorating the living room. I did find her on the ladder to the attic with the santa gear on but she seemed to switch back to normal gear if you follow her up the ladder. Not sure where the monologue about gift giving is supposed to come from. It's maybe a year since I last did this christmas stuff and I probably never finished it. I don't remember the huge stereo, but since I've played maybe another 20 or more other games since last looking at this one it could have happened but I just don't remember it.
I was going to post my last save, but am damned if I can work out where the saves are...I assume somewhere in the User data
