I like to keep originals quality but 50mb per pic is hard to render sometimes so I also use imagemagick command line to make and join sequential jpg versions. The command looks something like the following:
montage -mode concatenate tile x1 path_to_file1.png path_to_file2.png path_to_file3.png output.jpg
You can also give instructions to downscale the resulting jpg/png or do it separately afterward.
