TL; DR: Game code is somewhat bad; I have no hate towards the creator besides the obvious problems and monetization of a game using taken assets
To add my two cents in as well, the game is rough after so much time. Back when I was younger and certainly shouldn't have been playing adult games, I thought it was good. Nowadays after having to fix small but game breaking errors/bugs in RPGM and having to experience a fraction of the pain translators go through to translate games from this engine, I can say that it's much rough around the edges. I will skip over the asset flip since it's already apparent, but I really need to get this off my chest in terms on how the game is structured.
First of all, the free version (10.1 Standard Version) isn't bad at first glance but then you look at a certain encounter you can have in one of the maps, the centaur. The scene broke at some point, and it irritates me because it used to work, broke, was patched due to me mentioning it and then is currently broken again. If one looked at the event, you would see a glaring weakness, the whole script for before you beat the centaur is copy pasted to the page for when you do beat her, which is also missing the erase picture command, so the picture is stuck there forever. It might seem like a nitpick, but this event just seems to break every time and was annoying to fix every update that came out. Then we have 11.2 (The premium version) ...
Where do I start with this, how about we look at the Centaur events again? The event has a different problem in this version, the second page works fine but the first page is missing the erase picture command when you win the fight against her. The scenes for losing, winning and volunteering all have problems, first the disposal option will cut the scene off early (every other event I looked at for reference had the ending section working fine). Some pictures the scene used to have been no longer coded in anymore and thus you only have one image for the original scenes included in the Standard Version. A nitpick would be the lack of word wrap or failure to make the text fit the boxes, so you lose some context to conversations and scenes due to text getting cut off.
Look I wouldn't be so harsh if it were a simple indie game or something, it's not a big deal when it's a minor bug caused by translation, more often than not its fixed or I learn how to fix it. But this is a game from a creator who gets 800 USD of support, and I believe they have a family but that doesn't excuse just continuing to use art from other people and then monetize a premium version of said game. I understand it's hard to make a game and I could forgive it if you slowly changed the art with commissioned art over time, but the old scenes are more or less the same as I can remember them.
In conclusion this game has issues in parts but at the same time, my bias plays into this opinion, I'm no professional but I am someone who has experience dealing with this stuff. Raiv, if you do ever see this, I have nothing against you personally, but Forest Monster HD was a game based around an old era when taking art was common but also feels dated as a result. Don't force yourself to push out content and focus on delivering a game with quality instead of trying to create as many scenes as possible, the writing isn't bad, but the inconsistences and flaws shine through when you step back.
I'm going to take some time to just cool down, this is a rant I couldn't hold back any longer, anyone is free to correct me or criticize this post, I just didn't want to have this explode on me and by contrast my frustration is insignificant or small scale to real problems or compared to others. Not even fixing the ship capacity error (for me) in the Gacha Pirates translation was this frustrating and it took me an hour and a half to figure that out.
Good night/day and stay safe out there!
Till next time.
