Basically version B is a new world created by Zell it contains exclusive new monsters and some improvements over version A which is the old world still being supported by him and you won't find those monsters from B in A.

Alpha version updates are currently bug fixes and whatnot for the time being. Beta version updates are for additions to new monsters and a new tool

Both versions have their separated executeable but they are same game with same controls and gameplay just different world and monsters.

1) Yes, you can play only Alpha, only Beta, or both
2) Beta is considered an expansion for newer updates
