A few folks have said that the new chapter one gives less of an impetus for Guy to mistreat Nikki, but I think that it kind of the point. Guy decides to be an asshole because it is an option, not because he has a justification for doing so.
I think the problem here is that deciding to be asshole is always because of some internal justification, but in the remake the player isn't really offered anything that could serve as such.

"Because it's an option" needs some basis for why it's an option to begin with.

This is a game about power, how to use and misuse it. Power concedes nothing without a demand, and those in power tend to do as they please first and find a rationale later... if they even bother.
The rationale is always there even if the person exercising power doesn't stop to acknowledge it. People who choose to lord their power over others get off on that, simple as that.

I'm not sure how to respond since it seems like you answered it yourself lol. Guy chooses to be an asshole because he gets off on it. So why is it a problem that he has no other reason for doing so? Frankly, the further you go down the dark path the more it becomes obvious that you are roleplaying a sociopath.

I kind of worded that wrong and it can give that impression, yeah. Let me try to make some sense out of it: while the rationale of indulging oneself is always there for people who do it, no matter if conscious or not, arriving to that point is something of a process. You don't just wake up one day and out of the blue decide "i'm gonna be raping people from now on because this is what i enjoy" without any sort of build-up and prior experience with how abusing the power you have is actually pretty enjoyable.

Especially in the fictional works when this build-up is missing the player can be left with impression that their character "isn't there (yet) mentally" and the options to act like total asshole seem premature/unjustified.

Seems two different times in the life of the Dev. Before, three years ago, he was darker. A love delusion ? A separation? Who knows. Now seems he is in a good mood and he wants to save Nicky’s character. Probably “Nicky” is an importan person for NeonGhosts .
I'd say you should probably look at it as just a porn game and not an autobiography lol.. it's already been established that the version everyone was playing was the vanilla patreon version, so the dark stuff is naturally missing there. And if the dark scene in the full version ends up being a little less extreme, and you may have missed the author discuss it, it's because he felt her return would make more sense if the abuse was less violent; I mean, the dark content in the latest chapters are still very, very dark, so it's a little silly all the people worried about him scrubbing the dark stuff.

I think that even good Guy has a speck of darkness inside him he is pushing down so that he can make a positive impact on people's lives. At the same time, even bad Guy has innate goodness that he is turning his back on in his pursuit of personal gratification. A few folks have said that the new chapter one gives less of an impetus for Guy to mistreat Nikki, but I think that it kind of the point. Guy decides to be an asshole because it is an option, not because he has a justification for doing so. He feels agrieved by the world, not by anyone in particular, and takes it out on the girls in this game because he can. In my opinion, neither version of Nikki deserved mistreatment, but as the man once said "Deserve ain't got nothing to do with it." This is a game about power, how to use and misuse it. Power concedes nothing without a demand, and those in power tend to do as they please first and find a rationale later... if they even bother.
100% man. None of the other girls deserve a dark path either, but people still clearly play them; I think it's entirely whatever the player feels like in the moment, or however the player wants to interpret the LIs, use them as a scapegoat for maybe other women they're reminded of, etc. Nothing wrong with that, and of course maybe these ladies are intended by Neon to be worse than we realize, but, to me, they all feel like normal struggling people just doing the best they can.

If Neon had infinite productivity available to him, I bet playing from the perspective of Nicki or some other LI complete with romance/corruption/dark choices would be an interesting glimpse into not just their characters, but into what I'm pretty sure Neon is trying to convey. I.e., does someone like Ashe choose to use her body and looks to extract what wealth and opportunities she can out of Guy? Or does she try to build a genuine, loving relationship with him? Maybe she does just want to use him, but she's more honest and direct about her intentions and they can reach a more healthy, mutual agreement? Obviously, a genuine interpretation for the LIs needs to be the default for the players behind the MC or else the point of an erotic VN just falls apart, but I think that dynamic of choice and intention is more or less playing out in us all, and I like to imagine it's playing out in the LIs too.

i have said this before. at first i hated Nicki for ghosting mc for 3 months after they finally hook up. but her return and explanation, though idiotic in the extreme got me all protective of her and i liked her character alot after the story got moving. i liked some of the other LI's too but Nicki is my favorite. have i said this before? yes. i love her new look in the remake even more and even if the other chapters dont get a remake, as long as future story has her looking that good, i am fine with moving the story along from ch 11 on.

I looked at the script.rpy file in FriendsinNeed.v.0.25-pc I noticed it mentioned
# Check if patch.rpy exists in the game directory
patch = renpy.loadable("patch.rpy")

I noticed that there is no patch.rpy file in the game directory of FriendsinNeed.v.0.25-pc. Should I copy the patch.rpy file from a previous version into the new version game directory and change the value from 'false' to 'true'?

The is the same for all versions:
Code:

    $ patch = True
    return

Bro wasted a whole update on more nicky, the one girl everybody hates :KEK:
See - if you make it that obvious, everyone knows you're just trolling. No one hates Nicki and the dev has been talking for a year or so, in this forum, about doing the update and why he was doing it. You have to pay attention, at least a little bit, if you're going to troll successfully.

I like Nicky old and new Nicky. Without her character the game will be only a easy porn where the main character, a very rich man, fuck girls. But with Nicky all change, she’s his old love, like Beatrice was for Dante Alighieri.
Agree - Nicky's the one who convinces him that he can do good and help people - otherwise, might as well skip all the charity stuff and just hire hookers. It would cost less and you don't have to win them over or convince them to do anything. Personally Nicky is my favorite, she doesn't have to be yours but this game wouldn't really be much of a game without her - just a menu of ladies.

Don't say things like that, or we're gonna get next remake, Hookers In Need. :whistle:

The only bad thing about Nicki is, she makes me feel guilty for non-platonically liking Brittani. NeonGhosts can we get a "Nicki doesn't mind Guy having hots for Brittani" patch...
There is definitely a place for a harem game where you do nothing but collect Lis and there's no real story, and no real game and the Dev just spends all of their time inventing new repeatable scenes and new women. People would pay for that, but I imagine it would be pretty dull to make.

Played the remake today without reading the comments around here first, and right now at a glance I see some people sharing the same sentiment as I've had playing it.
Gotta preface it though by saying that wow, the difference in art is just fantastic. The old intro was kinda ugly at times and this shoots it out of the park! And while I never hated Nicki, she was never up there either, and I like her more now.

So, I've been playing this game on a "douche" path, like a helpful asshole of sorts, but the changes to the intro in comparison to how it was before makes it almost impossible to justify being even remotely bad to Nicki.
Before, the cards were completely stacked against her. We didn't know her because the connection with Guy was something we were told about but it was a bit meaningless since we didn't experience it. So props to Neon for fixing that. I feel way more attached to Nicki now.
However, I find that now the cards are too stacked in her favor. Because before you could use the argument that she was "using you" for your newfound wealth and let that be an opening for a darker path. I believe that if we still had that argument in the remake, the choice to be bad to Nicki would still be a difficult one and you wouldnt feel like you're "playing it wrong" by choosing to go that way. Right now Nicki is just awesome and basically flawless, and Guy has been very chill and nice too, so it feels out of character to suddenly decide to be shitty. And sure, everyone has had moments of morally bad decisions in life. No good person is good 100% of the time, so you could argue Guy just fucked up, but It kinda doesn't work for me, personally (I tend to play good guy in every game).
Just to be clear I don't think the new path is bad, but I don't find it good for those that aren't aiming for a good guy/romance route with Nicki. Well, saying it's not good is wrong too...the right word would be "hard". It's harder to play the bad guy because there are no arguments for it, "Guy is just bad now" doesn't feel good narratively. And making it be this much harder doesn't make much sense when you write all this crazy good shit for the route. This might steer new players into a route they might have not chosen given "fairer" options.

All that is just my opinion, of course, I still think this was a great remake and I can't wait for what's next.
I hope I managed to convey my experience correctly. I'm not native english speaker.

Thanks for reading.

Dev Update! 5/6/25

Hey, folks! Hope you're all doing well this week!

I've been collecting feedback for Chapter 1's remake, and I've been pretty happy with the reactions so far. There's some stuff I'll miss from the original, and stuff I wish I could've worked into the new Chapter 1, but just couldn't find the space for. But, overall I'd call it a success.

Moving on! I put out a short text story featuring Isabella Bellino, perhaps better known as "Brittani's mom," exploring her life some ten(ish) years prior to the beginning of our story. It's available to all subscribers, beginning at $2 -- but I'll be unlocking it and adding it to the main, sticky'd post in a month or so (longer if nobody reminds me..)

Finally, work is still ongoing to integrate the new Chapter 1 with the following Chapters 2-10. I'm working to untangle the mess that is Chapter 7 aka Ashe's Date, labeling things to make it easier to track her relationship, and attitude towards the player by the end of said date. So far so good, but.. Ugh. Tedious.

I'm also working to add a little bit of extra connective tissue between Chapters 1 and 2, which more clearly lays out Guy's journey from that fateful night with Nicki, to forming his charity, to becoming the more well-rounded and confident person he is when we meet him months later, at the start of Chapter 2. This adds a small scene (with some ero material) where we see Guy in Brazil -- an event previously alluded to in Chapter 4. Then, a small scene with Callie Chen of Chen's Convenience, which leads into the original opening of Chapter 2, where Guy meets Ashe.

After that, it's back to work on Chapter 11, targeting a release date for July.

That's all I've got for you today! As always, thanks for being here, take care of yourselves, and thank you for your support!
