Old school internet, it was basically the pirate bay of the 2000s only there was basically next to no attempts to prevent people from distributing malware and no attempts at keeping track of which users were uploading files. This being the 2000s meant your average computer user wasn't paying attention to why the music file they just downloaded was labeled .exe instead of .mp3, so as a result hackers flooded downloads that were just malware labeled as either porn or music. Even worse on the rare chance the malware was discovered and deleted the uploader could just reupload it again.
Thank god all the databanks were in the game we were all really worried all the databanks weren't in the game.
