There's a tiny possibility (that we hang tightly on) that the sister, Melissa, may not have died in the plane crash. MB trolls us with it, never truly denying nor confirming. It's really not a BIG chance, but the possibility is enough.
Hinting at something doesn't change it's status from unknown. Red herrings are a big part of writing, so until the identity is confirmed, it is best to state unknown and possibly supply a footnote with speculation.
