There's a scene in this update, with some content that might be quite extreme for some people, however, if you install the mod, it will warn you about the kinks, and you can choose to avoid that.
Please understand, that it is never the content of a game or what a dev put in it.

If done right pet play is one of my favorites(+the fact that good pet play is extremely rare), but of course nobody sane would hurt their pet that's not my cup of tea.

Didn't skip an update somewhere along the line did you? They come alone so frequently that it's quite easy to miss one. That causes all sorts of problems.
Nope. I always make sure to grab each and every update as they are released. I will try to re-download the full (or such that it may be) part 5 and plough through it to see if the problem persists though.
