Yeah, that's what makes it such a funny skit, to me.So I went through the lyrics and I think the song is really about irony, even if some of the similes are a little lame or missing the point.
Ed, on the other hand, pushes it to absurdities, which is the principle of most stand ups.
As you say, vast majority of stand up comedy is pointing out the absurdities of things, whilst being rather absurd about them.
A "No Smoking" sign, on your cigarette break. Not ironic in the slightest, just means that the person on the break chose the wrong place to light up. Ignorance is not irony.
A free ride, when you've already paid. Not ironic in the slightest, just stupidity.
