Yeah, no - it still exists, quite heavily in fact. I get to do more support on corporate phones now than even servers, desktops or tablets, and holy shit, half of my "fixing" is spent training people not to do what they did. Luckily I haven't had anyone ask about their "retractable coffee holder" in the PC for quite some time.
It's a little like watching Thomas work on engines, but like.. for real.

Networking techs used the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model for problem solving & it only had 7 layers.
The eighth was the user.
I remember our NetWare 3 guys always using that one.
