It's not that unusual.

The tradition of the child getting the fathers name or even the wife taking her husbands name has stopped being universal for some time now.

Kids born of parents that aren't married have been known to take the mothers surname. I've seen and hard of more than a few women keeping their own surname when married too, especially celebs.

Lookling at statistics, it is still quite unusual though, only about 14% of women in the U.S. kept their own last name after being married, so the chances of MB going that route on purpose aren't that high imo. Also when it comes to newborn babies, only about 5% get their mother's last name.

Taking above statistics in consideration, the chances are quite very slim that Cat should have the name of Williams without an underlying reason, unless MB was "lazy" when deciding her last name.

Pretty much what Ava said, it's especially common when the dad isn't in the picture which is the case here. He bailed before Cat was even born. Dude might as well be a sperm donor, it wouldn't make much sense for Cat to be given his name.

My characters last name is Riley, nana's last name in my game is Riley.....

Too be honest I find that the surnames are a little confusing if you don't change any surnames then Nana is Williams and MC, Amy, Liz and Cat are Miller, assuming Williams is Nans maidan name and Miller is her married name then how does the MC have the same surname unless his mom either just happened to marry someone with the same surname or unlikely married a family member.

And even if you do change the MC's surname then it also changes Amy's, Liz's and Cats to that surname.

I'll be honest ... none of this makes any sense.

I changed the MC's First and Last name. I didn't change Nana's Last name. In my game, Nana and all her living children (and Catherine) have the last name Williams.

My game, with no name changes:
MC- Thomas Miller, gets it's surname from his father.
Nana, Amy, Liz and Kat - surname Williams, get their surname from Allison's husband.

Anne, MC's daughter, should have the surname Miller, or, because Thomas and Tanya aren't married, Tanya's surname (don't remember if it was ever said).

I don't understand what the confusion is. MC's mother, Anne, was a Williams, until she married a Miller. I don't remember what is Allison's maiden name, maybe the same as her mother.

You guys are making it a lot more complex than it is.
