I mean that's more a dig against VNs in general, which wouldn't change if it was made in Unity.

Hopefully next update adds plenty of content then, we've been waiting for a pretty damn long time

No but the devs are fucking idiots so it might as well be
I think they're switching to Ren'py which is why nothing is happening
Good. Unity sucks, especially for VNs. It's just wayyy too hungry for something so simple.

He's not entirely wrong though. Unity and Unreal are focused towards more AAA, PC or console titles. They expect plenty of room to do their business in and use that space liberally to improve the experience (or rather, enable the dev to improve the experience, actual improvement may vary).

For something like a VN you don't really need 42069 megapixel raytraced supershaders, or multi-core turbo processor min-maxing, or any of those other five-dollar words. VNs are nice and simple and small. You can turn all those options off, of course, but by default they're on, and even under the hood some unalterable things still expect plenty of space. More focused programs can not only streamline the development of the VN but won't have all the unnecessary bells and whistles.

No, I hate phones in general too. But Unity does suck for VNs. It's laggy and hungry by default, even for VNs-- which don't need that much juice. Literally, just use Ren'Py. RPGM is your best alternative if you want a VN experience but some game elements, a la Siren's Domain (If you're too lazy to just use Python). Unity (and Unreal, but tbh Unreal is less sucky) are just unnecessary for the genre. There's also Godot, which I know literally nothing about except one of my favorite games on F95 is in Godot.

The only time Unity is better than Ren'Py--in the thing REN'PY LITERALLY EXISTS TO MAKE-- is when you're making "a game with VN elements" instead of "a VN with minigames" or "a VN". For example, Sunrider 1, 2, and 3 were made on Ren'Py so they're crashfests... just, weighed it down with so much code it just implodes on itself after you play it for a while. So they made SR4 in another engine.
