It would be unfare for the dev to make money from the donations of the patrons who are supporting them, under the current circumstances...
That is exactly what people are whining about.
Even though, anyone who was affected, if they chose to, could easily get out of it by stopping their payments on Patreon.
And they would still get the game for free, like everyone else.
