Comparing a living thing to a car is intellectually dishonest.
...Er, yes? That's rather the point of the whole VN. Racism is bad.

But try, for a moment, to put yourself in the shoes of someone for whom slavery is normalized. Slavery does not consider slaves to be people, because people are living things and considering a living thing is intellectually dishonest. So, they don't consider the slave caste to be of the same type as an actual person.

Ergo, elves are not considered as people. They are not treated like people. They are property, and the government will treat them as such. The government has a list of all the enslaved elves and what their pricetag is. If an elf is killed, then it is a case of destroyed property - literally identical to the destruction of a car or other valuable livelihood object like a home. Alternatively the elf is business merchandise and thus is subject to that kind of perception.

As a result, murdered elves will not be treated as a major crime. After all, nobody died, just an elf. Elves are not people, they are property. Property shouldn't be destroyed, of course, so it's still definitely a crime and will be persecuted, but it's not nearly the same morally as killing a person.

Slaves are property, or more accurately, livestock.
At least, that is how they are seen and treated as, by the people keeping them as slaves.
In the slave owning states in the U.S., before the Civil War, if a slave raised their hand to a free person, they could be whipped, or even hung by the neck until dead.
Even in many books of literature, a slave resisting or raising their hand to a free person would be grounds for a severe beating, or death.

From Roman law.

When a slave committed a crime, the punishment exacted was likely to be far more severe than for the same crime committed by a free person. Persona gradually became "synonymous with the true nature of the individual" in the Roman world, in the view of Marcel Mauss, but "servus non habet personam ('a slave has no persona'). He has no personality. He does not own his body; he has no ancestors, no name, no cognomen, no goods of his own."

And you are absolutely correct on both, I was born a raised in the south and to this day shit like that still happens and IT PISSES ME THE FUCK OFF that a person of a different color or nationality can be mistreated so damned harshly.

deep discussion on thread about anti racism and slavery

mean while in Tokyo some where a salaryman drinks is misery away and suffers from extreme over work close to the point of death

did slavery really ever go away

no its still here it just takes a different form
No Slavery is bigger than it's even been I believe there is an estimate of 50 million slaves currently on the planet.

You & me both wookie, You & me both.(sigh, what is it with people who think it's ok to mistreat other beings?)
As long as its not real, people won't give a shit, to some extent they express their more twisted desires in that way.

Not really, you are not taking something from the elf, you are robbing their owner. Still a property crime, but it would be anyway.

These cases depend on 2 things, one is the owner's ability to believe the elf, two is their financial ability to fight it in court. Along with criminal's own willingness to pay up.
If a human fights the case, the issues with believing an elf would definitely be an issue "That thing lied I aint even touch it".
Most slave owners either have the option to believe the elf here, in the case of stolen money. How many slave owners are actually willing to believe that the subhuman knife eared garbage didn'ts steal the money themselves? In case of damaged elves, buying a new one is likely less expensive than fighitng it out in court, especially considering business depending on the severity of injury.
Scars aren't a big fetish market for those who pimp out elves, and bigger injuries limit their work efficiency.
Even if its a property crime, the contempt for elves for most people would make any legal authorithy treat it in a much worse manner than other property. Police may stop a man from destroying another's car, but an elf being beaten to half death? Who cares, just buy a new one citizen.

I recall slavery today is bigger in raw numbers, smaller in % of world population. So the good news is we've made progress and it's the smallest it's ever been per capita, bad news is it hasn't been eradicated

Ok. I've done everything in current build bar the last Kali mission. All stats maxed with everyone except Jin. She's been stuck on 5/10 forever. There's an '!' on her but I can only find her in Lin's room and she doesn't do anything except say hello. Any idea how to progress her?

Edit: Think it's something to do with buying stuff in the Park??? But every time I try go there it says 'come back another day'. I've tried every day of the week. And pretty sure already did Eris visits as nothing else to do at bowling alley except delivery/tournament.

Yep. Already maxed out Garden. Think I might have screwed myself by not progressing her sooner :(

Edit: Ok wow. like 50 hours in the game and never noticed that door in the garden.....

Have you clicked on the back gate in the garden, and done THOSE upgrades?
Then sleep alone so the garden gets finished?

Can anyone tell me why Maria isn't coming to the hotel? Ashley has been level 30 for 60 days, but she hasn't come.

EDIT: I cheated skip level. So I rolled back to 8. Nevertheless, she doesn't seem to be coming.
