No, I didn't check anything. I am just a random user who happens to be a software developer -- except I recently researched the very problem I described in my post. It's possible that the one working link leads to a repackaged version. Possibly one that was patched for some reason.
I apologize for writing "This problem, which exists with most ZIP files available on this site". This isn't actually knowledge but speculation based on what I know, and I should have made that clear. Although for some games all versions seem to be affected, it's possible that there is something specific to those games or developers that triggers it, such as the developer using a different operating system than most. So maybe only a few games are actually affected.
You seem to have solved the problem for now, but if you run into it again: Just do what I said and use a different tool for extraction. It's not that hard. IIRC, 7zip and the built-in extraction for MacOS are the ones that people typically have problems with. (ZipAda also has the problem, but practically nobody uses it. I did, because it has unusually good diagnostics. Unfortunately I don't know what to do with the diagnostic output other than it confirmed that the ZIP file doesn't quite follow the standard.)
