That brings me to another point, you can't have more than one copy of the game on your pc, at least on the same profile, as they will try to use the same folder in AppData, and the persistent file will not like the older one.

This Ren'Py feature is utterly annoying. More than a feature, I would call it "a bug by design".

It creates more problems than it solves. That transparently overwriting the persisten file is demential. It should at least prompt for confirmation.

Even better, there should be a native way to keep persistent files separate for different releases.

How could the Ren'Py developers not foresee that many players would like to be able to have more releases of a game on the same computer?

There are ways around it, but it requires the developer to deal with it.

For example, using the slotname callback (

), which was added a couple of years ago, and mixing that with a regexp when listing saves or slots. The other options are more complex, but revolve around swapping the config.save_directory value.

But it does require the developer to implement it, because anything more complex than a basic 'save' option requires a lot more work.

As it applies to Harem Hotel beta releases, it's not really worth Runey's time/effort. If someone wrote a workable solution, and stuck it up for everyone to use, then maybe it'd find its way into testing patterns for games, but there's little point.

If they would remove the AppData folder crap, it would not be a problem, but then players might have to learn to not delete their saves, and I guess that is too hard.

I'm sure it does happen every once in a awhile. For example....Some times I purge my renpy save folder in the apdata and sometimes I forget about a certain game and it ends up being deleted with the rest. lets face it....that folder gets pretty hefty after awhile lol. I started saving my actual saves now instead of relying on the backups.
But I will say that probably 95% of the ppl claiming that they lost their saves are lying and just want an easy mode save so that they don't have to put the work in their self.

What usually happens for me is I delete everything to save space, then wait a dozen updates before downloading again / signing back up to Patreon. But I've never asked for saves. I just Skip/Fastforward the whole thing again. It admittedly gets pretty painful for longer games like Superhuman, or games with lots of clickable choices. I should really just keep manual saves somewhere!

And even if it can be done as a simple overwrite, you'd have to make sure players copy the new version over the old one properly rather than just hitting "extract here" and creating a new folder for the new version.

The appdata saves do introduce some downsides in some circumstances, but they also lower the barrier to entry for most use cases.

Yes, they would have to be responsible people, and copy over the save folder and screenshots like a normal person does (or even an Android user). If the phone people can learn to do it, surely anyone on a PC can learn to move a file.

Do you have any idea, how many times I have had to reinstall windows in the last 7 years since this game started? Be smart, keep things safe, not in a system folder.

Depending on the version, it can just happen, there are also hardware failures, and other things that are not under anyone's control. Windows 10 is an awful piece of crap, and needs tons of third party crap just to have half the functionality of the old versions. The computer of mine that has the most problems, is the one that is closest to the base Win10 build, and gets all the updates. It has way faster hardware, and it runs way slower.

You should never clutter up a system drive with useless shit.

Don't ever use My Documents, that is the first place someone is going to look for your shit.

Those people can still save their save. It's not hard. Don't baby people, they need to learn how to use their shit, and they need to learn there are consequences for their actions. People should be able to do the bare fucking minimum of how a computer works if they want to use one. If you delete your saves, that is on you. Learning from our mistakes is how we improve as a society.
