I downloaded this from the Upload Haven link. The zip file contained an installer (which I thought was odd), the installer offered to put half a dozen programs on my PC which I declined, then it installed them anyway.

Is this normal for this application, or was this something Upload Haven did?

I just redownloaded from uploadhaven and haven't encountered a problem with the file. There was no installer.

You got tricked by an advertisement to download malware instead of downloading the file you actually wanted (this game)
Use ublock origins, it will help you block such malicious advertisements.
