Or... He's honing his skills, learning how to set scenes, Render scenes, lighting, posing and story writing/boarding. I wouldn't be surprised if he's (they) are learning to do some actual short animations. All of which if they go to a bigger studio and presents a these skills, all attached to a fairly well received game could go a long way to getting them hired on. Probably the only restriction would be to never link that studio to these games and to create a new handle while working there.
Or maybe they just really want to tell this story and are okay doing this as a hobby.
