Honestly most hentai universe insects and other weird beasts tend to look more aesthetically appealing than the overly bizarre ugly bastards. They're normally drawn so fucking hideous it's really eye-catching, I don't get how people can get off to shots of a girl getting railed with this nasty barely human-looking guy girning away in the background.

I always assumed it was because either a) they themselves look (or think they look) like the ugly bastard, and so they identify with him; or b) they got rejected by a hot girl once, so now they have a chip on their shoulder and want to see hot girls get their comeuppance.
I agree about the insects, though. It definitely depends on the species, but a lot of them have this almost alien look I find kind of cool. (That effect is 100% lost on me when it comes to deformed hybrid mutant babies, though.)

As a connoisseur of ugly bastards, I can tell you it is more of just "Beauty and the Beast (ugly)" which has that degrading and humiliating aspect.
Similar thing can be achieved with some sort of sleazy monsters (orcs, goblins, etc). Where is generic ugly hobos is more down to earth instead of fantasy world fat pig like orcs railing elves.
It has nothing to do with self insertion, I don't think I ever self inserted into any porn material I've watched.

Sums it up why people get turned on to monster stuff like Goblin Slayer and Berserk.
I guess stuff like goblins, orcs, or ugly bastards leans too hard into the humiliation aspect for me, because I’m a fan of everything else on that list, but Goblin Slayer really isn’t my cup of tea, as far as titillation goes.

Yeah some of them are just stupidly, ridiculously hideous to the point they no longer even look human. Socrates comes to mind, his main character straight up looks like a mummified corpse.
I like insects and I don't really mind the ugly characters either. I don't really have much of a problem with the ugliness, it's usually the "bastard" part of "ugly bastard" that turns me off. That's why I don't have a problem with insects, tentacles, monsters and stuff like that. The insects and the monsters in most stories are portrayed as simply acting on instinct. They're just creatures looking for a mate.
The "ugly bastard" character on the other hand is in most stories a gigantic psychopathic piece of shit who wants to completely destroy his victim's life, not just simply have sex. I can tolerate stories with ugly protagonists so long as the characters are not complete pieces of garbage. To me that just screams "edgy for the sake of being edgy".
So yeah, insect stories for me, preferably consensual ones. I like it when the girl is willingly degrading herself but they are rare. I take what I can get most times. Beggars can't be choosers when it comes to niche fetishes like this.

As a person incredibly conscious of their physical appearance... in my absolute darkest hours I've still never seen myself look a lick like a traditional ugly bastard. I'm kinda concerned if people DO see themselves like this though, they tend to be classed as manipulators and rapists.
I can understand that with the lower-end stuff, homeless people lowly monster etc sure, when it's just a fat dude with glasses scoring bitches there's an argument for it. Ugly monsters or ugly/poor/sleazy dudes, sure, Night of Revenge had some good shit based around that. But a lot of these uggo designs are so warped in the face and body that they do not register as human, more like a twisted warty parody of life or a mimic. Might as well be another monster at if they're going to lose so many identifying human traits.
That's where the trope tends to go, yeah. It gets so depressing and out there with degradation etc that it almost becomes comical, too edgy for its own good without much, if any reason to justify it. And very often the woman tends to be completely oblivious to their own danger or how much creep aura comes off of them. 95% of the time it's just too silly of a plot point for me.
