This was something that I ~deeply~ enjoyed while playing Scars of Summer, especially with how it handled things from a limited perspective as well (unless you specifically sought out the full scenes). Having to constantly check the game's map to see if Ryoka's little icon had changed locations, going there to check if she was just doing something innocuous, and being able to get vague hints which would sometimes turn out to be nothing from the main character's cell phone whenever she broke away from the usual routine. It added another layer of gameplay beyond just linear progression of events.

If nothing else, I think it provides a wonderful aspect of messing with the player's expectations, like with the scene of Leto going to visit the Duke in the first public version and having the scene imply that he might be doing something with Rose before it's revealed to be some other woman — but with much more agency on the player's part by encouraging "freeform" paranoia of wandering around the map instead of just watching a scripted scene unfold.

And also hard agree on the outfit changes. Of course I understand if the new sprites might complicate that, but I think that was easily one of my favorite turning points in Chapter 2 when Aywin, Celis, and even Solana all visibly changed to reflect how far the lines had been pushed for them.
A fellow Scars of summer enjoyer! I personally agree with all the things you said, having to look around a bit for Ryoka while unsure of what you will find added to the experience greatly. But going around checking up on everyone all the time to make sure you don't miss anything can be very frustrating, some hints are usually needed.

A game that had this problem was spiral legend V (I'd still recommend it if you are okay with spending a lot of hours without a lot of sexual content, the story is quite good for a porn game) where there was barely any indication about where the character were and if anything happened (and the search area was huge). I was happy to see the crystals that the magical shop guy gives to you towards the end of this HC3 version, the ones that are supposed to light up when something happens to one of the girls. I'm assuming they will help a lot with that.

While we are talking about features and design, I recently discovered that one thing I enjoy to an extreme degree is non-verbal interactions between the female male character and the antagonist, out of view from the mc but in view of the player. Or rather, the interaction might be verbal, but "out of earshot" I suppose.

Perhaps the mc is in the next room over and the player can see those rpgmaker type text bubbles above the FMCs and the antagonists heads and is left to wonder what is being said when the girl blushes etc. Combine this with some movement in the scene. The player interacts with something and while doing so the characters move in the other room, developing the scene as opposed to the other characters being completely static or stuck in an animation (which is static).

Great examples of this is found in Squirrel Legacy (yes the game is about getting cucked by a giant talking squirrel, which made me avoided it for a long time, but damn it ended up being up there fighting with scars of summer for the spot of my favourite game. If the squirrel does not scare you too much, try it, its also pretty funny.)

You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.

Most rpgm games seems to be structured such that when a scene is taking place, its static and only changes out of view of the player. The mc might leave to do something with the change happening out of view of the player. It might sound like a simple thing but I really think it adds something when the player gets to see the other characters move around and interact.

There is absolutely something to having to leave the other characters out of view too, being forced to imagine what might be going on, but the former seems underrepresented, probably because its a bit trickier to pull off. In the squirrel game those scenes always happens when the player is locked in place, reading a book or talking to a bartender, giving the illusion of it being more dynamic when its actually more of a cutscene, but it really works well.

Edit: does anyone else feel a bit dumb after realising you just sat down to write a wall of text about pornography?

Oh, I would absolutely agree with you on that; it can become pretty frustrating when you aren't given enough indications that something has changed. That's why I think the cell phone was such an integral part of that formula for Scars of Summer (with some hefty drawbacks, like being limited with how many times you are able to check on Ryoka each day until you've reached a point where you can just buy spare batteries and render that mechanic completely pointless, or some of the hints you get being a bit too vague).

That's a big part of why I'm really hopeful with the magic orbs that were added for this iteration of Henteria. It's a nice, simple way to give the player a nudge to explore, and from how they were initially described, it seems like there might be some false positives mixed into there to keep things tense. It could be something normal, or something shocking; you won't know until you find it, and it just saves the player time of being disappointed by nothing.

One thing I would find amusing would be if, in the later parts of the story, you might see the orbs light up more often with no way to actually see what is happening. Once the Duke has corrupted Rose, having her orb just go absolutely crazy to imply that a lot of things are happening, but with Leto unable to get through the gate. Though that would need a really clear message to the player that they shouldn't go hunting around for hours and get frustrated... Perhaps as a scripted event that is out of the player's control, where Leto is trying to sleep but keeps seeing the orb(s) light up again and again throughout the night, or having some big change to the status quo where the orbs become overloaded and break in some way that conveys to the player that the game mechanic has changed. That would leave the player feeling even more disempowered and forced to rely on the "blindly search the map" approach, but at a specific stage in the game where there would be plenty of things to actually find. I could see that working as a brief way to build up to the inevitable climax, as long as it didn't overstay its welcome. Like if the orbs broke at the 50% mark of the story and stayed that way for the rest of the game, that might get pretty frustrating... but if it was only the brief stretch of 80% to 90% right before hitting the branching point between endings, I would find that dramatically interesting.

and now I'm just thinking out loud because I'm so anxious for the next public update :ROFLMAO:

Those are actually really good ideas. I hope that, if NTaii wasn't already planning, that he see's and steals them!

Isn't this somewhat similiar to the partial and omniscent view?
If you play in partial mode the orbs may glow but you cannot find the location of the event or you only see speech bubbles, shadows or hints from NPCs. A guard in front of the dukes room stopps you or a church visitor tells you the priestess went somewhere with a suspicious young man. Sometimes you find/see it, other times you know that something is happening but you cannot confirm what exactly and where. That's the point of partial pov, to let your imagination fill the gap.

The omniscent pov will then show you what's going on behind the dukes door or where Haylen dissapeared to.

Something in between would be the best way to do it; Mass Effect 2 handled it with the Yeoman telling you 'Garrus wants to see you' when there was a conversation chambered. If it comes down to it, HC3's MC could think to themself 'I should check on Rose', for example, giving a character-initiated text prompt to the player to go looking for her.
I believe something of the sort has already been implemented with the three orbs we got at the end of the last public update? If I remember correctly, they light up when the girl the orb corresponds to is experiencing "intense emotions" or something. Which, given Leto's job and connection to them, would probably lead to him wanting to check up on them.

The only iffy part of it is that the orbs are back at his house, and I don't exactly see Leto frequently heading back to his house during his rounds. Maybe he could get a bracelet or something that has smaller versions of the orbs in it, that we could see from the status screen?

This is actually a pretty genius idea, I can see poor Leto trying to sleep while his room is lit up like a rave

Next update, I'll be adding a techno soundtrack that blasts full volume whenever an orb is glowing, each orb with their own track. If all four are glowing at the same time, well, MC better have good earplugs.

I just wanna put it out there.

Its so fucking insane how, unlike some other threads, this thread is so fucking civilized and people are actually having logical conversations.
Yeah, where's the enjoyment in that? I started being an NTR dev because I heard there was drama, but look at people being all mature and stuff. Next time I'll start a harem game and add unavoidable NTR halfway through, that should make it more interesting.

Jokes aside, to adress some of the points made above:

-There will be progression with character's outfit, getting lewder as the story progresses, both for the pixel version and the illustration in the characters screen. The illustration won't necessarily reflect the pixel outfits though.
-I don't intend for orbs to have "false positives" where they lead to nothing. They're meant to be reliable, helpful in-game tools to find freeroam events, so I want people to trust them. Maybe as a scripted event though, they could work.
-Release for the next public version will be on the 20th next month, so right before Christmas.

You need to buy whichever version of RPGMaker you wish to start with. The one I use is MV, and the most recent is MZ. You can find them all on Steam.

Well, that could be an idea for a future outfit, although her boobs won't fill up her shirt as well as in this image.

Um... I have a rather strange question. I'll start by saying that I'm Russian and I have few opportunities to buy a subscription to the game, although I really want to do it. For example, access to Patreon is forbidden to me, I can go to the other two sites where you can buy a subscription, but I'm not sure that my bank cards will be accepted for payment. Is there any way for me to support the author and get $5 early access to the game? I could pay for the subscription with some kind of electronic wallet, like Webmoney... I don't even know who exactly I'm directing my question to, probably guys like me who can't get early access...

I suspect if the process of buying RPGMaker has defeated you you'll have some trouble with actually making a game
