Definitely possible. I took it that maybe there were some other unfavorable types in the department that he didn't want to catch on. Then I considered that maybe he was trying to help her so she would eventually fall for him. Also possible that he could be as bad as the other two who are in need of a dirtnap. I always come back to why would he recommend us for the job if the ultimate goal is going to be to kill her, unless he knows we failed once and expects the same. I've assumed that she was assaulted by several and they were trying to kill her to keep her quiet, that's the whole of the story that she hasn't told anyone, maybe he was one of them, certainly wouldn't hurt them or seem farfetched to have a detective on their payroll.. CLEARLY I am too trustworthy LMAO
Yeah, I could always be wrong, of course, but I felt like that was a reverse red herring. Instead of pointing out another possible suspect to throw us off the scent, it's just conveniently never clear enough to know that the detective's involved. So rather than drawing focus elsewhere, a possible malefactor is effectively muted so we tend to look past him.
IMO you've hit the nail on the head here. At least, that's pretty much what I've been thinking since playing through this latest release. Find someone who's failed and taken a hit to their confidence in their abilities and manipulate them to fail again because of their own hesitancy and doubt. Exploiting an element known to be weak has a greater chance of success than trying to find weakness in an unknown factor.
Hah! Well, I'm absolutely too skeptical and suspicious of everyone in general. I don't think you can have gone through as many thrillers / mysteries (books, films, and games) as I have and then keep a default setting when starting a thriller of taking characters at face value.

Amen to that. The more arts you absorb (novels, games, movies whatever) rich in plot twists, the more your mind grows to unravel them early

Yes, all of this. The other alternative is that Carter is extremely bad at his job, but then why is he a detective and/or working for Wolff & Friends in a position where he could really screw things up?

Yeah i think it's similar to how MC saw his buddy lurking around at the clothing store when he was out with Emma.. Dev probably wanted to create the illusion that he was involved with the stalking business but honestly I still don't trust him fully and this scene with Carter makes me trust him less as well..nobody can be trusted in Hillside not even the cops.
Or it so simple with Steve that he has a part to play at the end of the story, so he needs to appear now and again.
Whether Steve has a good or bad part to play when it's all said and done remains to be seen but I think David is gonna be Emma's boyfriend.. She's not an Li for MC she's more like a daughter character for him and so far David seems like he genuinely cares about Emma.. But hey shit could always take a 180.
