Never seen that myself, but it's pretty funny if people are hating on RenPy now too :ROFLMAO:
I'm an official Ren'py hater. I've never played a Ren'py game that I found fun or arousing.

I like games because they're interactive (and also the sex is usually more frequent). Visual novels as a game genre are simply just not interactive, and Ren'py can only really make VN's. The "games" that try to do something other than be a visual novel in Ren'py would just be better off in any other engine.

You are not alone with disliking Ren'py games. I don't hate them, but the game play is usually very passive, clicking the next button isn't that exciting.

I have a folder where I stash games, that I played and liked, and out of about 70ish games, I think I have 1 Ren'py game saved (The Pilgrimage).

I think games made with RPG Maker have an advantage of superior story elements. Last sovereign, demon"s roots, tower of trample. These are certified classics. Because assets are mostly from engine and RPG Maker scripting is relatively easy, developers can focus on story and lore more.

I'm totally neutral towards RPGM. My only gripe towards RPGM are some lazy developers who pad playing time with too frequent random combat. Peasant's Quest is a great example of good usage of RPGM (although it is somewhat guilty of "padding combat" from time to time).

RPGM art sucks. I mean, the vanila art sucks. And it looks that it's diffucult to remove some mechanics, for example, games which there is only exploration have a combat system or a weapon / armor system empties.

If they have animated sex scenes = Okay, i'm in

If they don't = Meh, i'll pass

If they are a parody of something i like though, then i might give them a try even if they don't have animated scenes

The biggest issue I have with RPGM is the complete lack of quality-of-life settings. You can fullscreen some games, but the resolution is still surprisingly low without any way of increasing it. You can't screenshot easily like Ren'py. The menus are ugly as sin, and the default character sprites are extremely dated too. I've also occasionally run into stability issues where some games will straight up freeze up or crash outright, something that doesn't really happen with Ren'py.

I won't completely ignore a RPGM game if it uses that engine, but the game certainly gets kicked down quite a few pegs in my priority list just because I don't want to deal with the annoying bullshit associated with the engine.

Having said that, I will suggest this game as one with solid combat: Eldorante
Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a look! (y)

It doesn't have to be limited to RPG Maker though. Games like Vampire Survivors and Undertale look terrible but have amazing reviews. It's the visual trap that everyone making a classic/retro looking game has to avoid. RPG Maker games are an easier target because they can usually be spotted from a distance.
Wait, Vampire Survivors was made in RPGM? I know Undertale was, but the vamp game wasn't IIRC.

If anything lately games made in Ren'Py are basically a carbon copy of each other with some different renders. While most of RPGM are just walking simulators till the next scene a handful actually have fun game play and usually the fetishes are more fun.

I mean, a lot of people say they hate sandboxes too, but if you look at the most viewed games here most of them are sandboxes. Similar thing.
Most viewed is more about active development time and how old a game topic is than about popularity. Easier to have more views if it's 6 years old than if it's 2 years old, and if something had 40 updates during development instead of 10. Just look how most threads on the first page were made before 2020.

Ah but see, even if you're right I refuse to accept it. That would mean the 700k views on my game is just because I updated every two weeks, and I don't like that!

I don't think there's a nice way to put this point in words...

Just a bit over 1 year in development isn't long tho...

I don't think it's fair to disregard any project based on its engine alone but I admit I have yet to play a seriously good RPGM adult game

It's an acquired taste.
I find the "lots of games are low quality" argument pointless. It's not like RPGM deletes your project if quality exceeds a level, that's why reviews exist. It's like yearning for the good old days where games were exclusively made in c++ and those pesky amateurs didn't muddy the perfect heritage of videogames.. wait... they still made shitty games sometimes.

If anything, it's strength lies in it's simplicity. It's niche enough that it simplifies lots of the hurdles. People make lots of games for it, raising the chances that good games come out. More games for you to play, more better, less watching youtube with nothing to do.

Most game development tools have a barrier to entry that inhibits low-effort production. Usually (usually!) people with the programming knowledge to develop in Unity or Godot also have a decent grasp of game design. RPGM on the other hand allows virtually anyone to slap together a game and upload it. As a result, RPGM games are often unfun and plagued with fundamental issues that a more skilled gamedev would have intercepted.

That being said, RPGM is a real gift. A lot of people do not have strong programming skills but still have the brain to design a fun game. It is a powerful engine when used to its full potential.
