In RPG Maker games there is no option to save before choosing and there is no option to roll back the text if you accidentally did not read it. In games with beautiful graphics I look at pictures, but do not play, the rest I ignore.

Adding Save/Load/Backlog during dialogue is definitely possible in RPGMaker.
Save is a bit of a pain because the interpreter isn't made for it, but we got it going with a bit of tinkering.
Besides the plugins ( ) that we developed for Star Knightess Aura (which aren't quite drag&drop) to setup in a project, there are some other plugins that achieve this.

VisuStella for example (although expensive) provides most of the common visual novel functionalities in a drag&drop manner.

I don't dislike RPGMaker games in general. The problem with it is that it's far too easy to create a walking simulator in which you end up running around like a headless chicken in a huge area almost devoid of things you can interact with hoping that something changes next time round. It's a relatively easy game engine to get started with and, as a result, people dive in without thinking things through properly.

IMO areas need to be compact and everything that isn't background needs to be something you can interact with and that interaction needs to be meaningful, let's have less of the "Nothing to do here" crap. If it isn't background and you can't interact with something, it has no business being visible at all.

Wow, that's a huge amount of custom plugin work you guys did for Star Knightess.

Have you had any issues with the save/load feature direct from dialogue? That seems like it would cause instability.

Yeah, the interpreter always jumps to the next line *before* executing the current one while sometimes jumping multiple lines ahead for some commands that get executed together, most notable Message Box + Choice or even to a different location because of Label GoTos, so you need to be able properly to ensure proper reexecution. Also not all data is persistent, some is transient only, so catching all of that was quite bothersome. I hired a programmer to take care of those details though. His first proposal was to disable saving before choices and similar to deal with this problem :D :D :D

Other than that, migration is a problem. Since the currently executed script is part of the state, when changing it and then loading it up again in a new version can cause compatibility problems that are mostly not migrateable.

However, besides the interpreter interactions, it's not that crazy or causes instability provided the currently executing script wasn't altered.

So I've noticed while browsing F95 over the past 2+ years that many users here say they absolutely hate RPG Maker games and won't touch them with a 10-foot pole. Now granted this isn't completely undeserved because many (most?) RPGM games tend to abuse stock assets (sounds, tiles, portraits, sprites) and on top of that tend to have have piss-poor gameplay. It's usually baby's first RPG that gets made with it... with all the pitfalls that come along. Also the engine's kinda clunky out of the box, so interacting with its UI is painful at the best of times.

RenPy AVNs seem to be by far the most popular type of adult games here, but there's also some RPGM heavy hitters like Treasure of Nadia and Karryn's Prison. (click me!)

Now I'm just interested in how many of you play RPG Maker games if they're well made and fun... hence the poll. Feel free to comment down below and post your thoughts/experences with the engine and its games, whether as a player, dev, or both. Bonus points if you can list RPGM games with solid combat systems.
I'm not a huge fan of the RPGMaker engine for hentai, i think Renpy or another engine is almost always better... but perhaps i'm a bit biased since Renpy is the engine i use for my games.

There are a few decent RPGmaker hentai games, league of domination, a new life in submission, Domina. but these games are really just good because of the hentai scenes not the engine or "gameplay" these games could easily be made in another engine and i would argue made better.
