You have to read the discussions between the characters. Kate explains at the beginning of the game that there may be an axe in the fire station.

PGUP open the questbook and PGDN open the map. You can also use the icons below the game clock. The question mark is the guide with all the explanations of the game as well as shortcuts. You can also check the keybord config in the settings to know the keys or configure them.
All this is explained in the introduction as well as the buttons if you play with an xbox pc controller. The controller can also be configured in the settings
