If you could buy a completed game in a store, would you?

How much would you pay for a finished game?

Depends on the Game. For a full 3 Act DMD I would pay like 30$.

Sure as hell I'll never be with mine, if I ever get married. I mean, do you imagine me telling her

"Honey, I like futanari. I like chicks with dicks, is that fine for you?"

I mean, the divorce would be right around the corner in a blink of an eye.
Dude, I think you don't know anything about love, lol! If a girl divorced you because you told her one of your fetishes, she didn't like you in the first place...

I'd probably buy it if it's something I really want. I mean I'm already in the store so why not?
Yes, back to topic! (y)

So far, it looks like:
1) Most people would in fact buy a game in a store, if it were available
2) The sweet spot for most games would be around $20

This means that for a dev, the Patreon model is in fact more profitable. With Patreon, you'd pay on average maybe $5 / month for a period of, on average, maybe 18 months. That's $90, and there are no guarantees that the game will ever be finished.

Obvious, at least for me. But then "more" profit isn't the right description about it.

First it is more on supporting the dev, than buying his product. For this you can wait till the game is finished / near finished and the pay the lowest tier to unlocked the game. Would cost probably 20$ (4x5$), so it is the same as for the "one time buy".

Other than that: Normaly a fresh released game cost - a least in my country - about 50$ or more (Triple A titles) in a retail/online store. From this 50$ the company that develop the game will see less. How much I don't know. I believe on Steam that are 30% from the number, so you "only" earn 35$.
But of course then such a title will, probably, be sold a few millions. So you would received 350 millions if you sell it 10 millions time. Again the development budget of such title will also be in the milliions.
Even if you have a small game title and your production budget was a lot less, then I assume you would also sold not as much copies as the big triple A title with a commercial budget that most likely cost more than the indie game you have made.

All of this game have the problem that you need money to develop and you must earn at least this money back when you release your game.
If you are a one men/woman show in my country, worked 1 year on a game, then I say, you must at least bring back ~50k and then you are on square one.

I believe most devs want to develope. Even if you are the most gifted dev around the whole earth, one people has its limit and the day have only 24h. So, if your next idea is bigger than you can work on it yourself you must hire other people. For this you need money and, more than that, credibility.
I wouldn't take a job from a new dev without any history and a tight cash reserve - as a regular job.

Therefore the monthly payment variant. It enables a lot of the dev to invest some more time (or resource) in they game that they could not do otherwise. As a double edge sword, as it is, the patreons are on the development aspect the same as share holders. The will take some of your freedom away frrom the development process.

And the porn game in the open game library. When a "real" porn game - not the soft one, who already are there - would be available on shops like PSN and so, I would by it if it's fit my taste. But would prefer a boxed version and if it really fits my taste a want a collector edition like the old ones (Lunar, Arc the Lad) - not so scam ones that have 1-2 digital goodies and nothing more...

As for me, if this kind of game would be appear on the usual video game consoles, then it would mean that we can finally pay and play this kind of games and show the respect as open as all others.

For the record: 20-40$, but depends. If it is my *perfect* game that is on the website or the shelf in the shop, without any previous knowledge about it, only the information of the case available, then 20-40$. Because I would have my doubt if it's a real deal or only some rip-off.

Maybe profitable was not the correct word, maybe sustainable would have been better.

What Patreon does is create some kind of "stable" monthly income for a dev, where depending on sales of a completed game requires a substantial investment, namely the development time, when the dev earns nothing at all.

And, in my obviously flawed calculation, the Patreon model could bring more money in total as well.

On the other hand, I would really love to be able to buy games in a store. The problem with reputation (the fear of getting ripped-off) is something that can be dealt with. One "just" needs a label and solid marketing, coupled with a distribution network.

For me it's more like the first adult sex game in a "normal" catalog would always leads me to this thought. A demo can help, but a lot of demos are to short to help me with my decision.

It is the same with every other game, with or without demo. If you take a game from the shelf, look at it's cover, you will always see the "best" possible side of the game. Sometime this is enough, most times it is a pig in a poke.
Why are do so much game serie exist? As a promise if you have like the last one, then you will like this and it works, but not always.

So I think, when it's normal to buy a adult sex game from the shelf in the middle of other adult sex games and others, then my curiosity would be on the same level as why all the "normal" games. Will I like it? How long is it?......

And for sure, they will do the same good, bad and stupid things than then the rest of the "normal" games have done before:ROFLMAO:.

I would maybe, but I would certainly not pay as much as for a regular game (unless it offered gameplay remotely similar to a regular game, but I consider this too unlikely). 30€ would be my personal maximum, although it would have to meet these requirements:

1) It must not be a Steam game. I like privacy and I don't like achievements like "Professional Motherfucker" or "Shining Strapon Dildo of Doom" on my Steam account.

2) It must be better than anything I'd find for free on the internet. It doesn't necessarily have be technically perfect, but it certainly needs the fetished I want, a lot of content and excellent artwork.

I'd buy a VN like Katawa Shoujo for under 20$.
I'd buy a full feature game polished with an ongoing dev team like Portal of Phereon or Lilith's Throne or Tales of Androgyny for 20 to 40$; I would gladly buy into an early access for it on Steam at 5$ to 15$.
I'd gladly pay 1$ to 5$ for a game like TF Card Battles in current dev state.

*Raises hand* I have bought physical copies of adult games from brick-and-mortar stores and real world marketplaces (in several countries in fact). All legit, genuine copies; none of that blackmarket nonsense. In my experience, they were more expensive than other, more mainstream games. In a couple of instances, I've even picked up extras based on whatever game I purchased such as special, limited edition cards, mini-books, or a poster.

However, I have generally moved on to digital storefronts when purchasing new games. Getting these games online through a digital storefront is simply easier, quicker, and cheaper. Plus, there are more choices offered at any given time. And if I really wanted a physical copy of a game, I could just order it (if that option is available). It's rare to see physical copies anymore in the real world anyway.

Now, getting back to the OP's questions:
  • If I spot a game in the real world and it checked off a bunch of boxes, then would I buy it? Sure. I'd buy a physical copy.
  • Would I pay what I used to pay for physical copies of adult games (and specifically "a completed Daz3d / Ren'py game")? No way. I have my reasons why, but I'll be honest, the most I'd pay for this type of game today would be in the mid-20s or about 20 EUR. Ideally, a pricepoint where I'd be comfortable to pull the trigger would be about $15 / 13€. I would (and have) paid more for other styles of adult computer games.

I am buying porn games on Steam. Those are usually indie games and it is impossible to buy a physical copy of such games.
But there are a LOT of good $1-$3 H-games on Steam. Mirror is a $2 game and you can buy Hunie Pop for $3 on a sale.
So, I don't think it is possible to sell an H-game for $30 or even for $15 successfully unless it is a very famous game. I never charge more than $5 for my own hentai games.

Yes. Although the idea of developers getting paid for a finished project rather than monthly updates to a forever beta version of the game seems to be sacrilege.

I have no issue what so ever buying a FINISHED product. (and I have) I however will not support a dev who's just milking their patrons and that's the general feel I get from many.

I also would like to have physical copies of my games. I hate that everything is digital and have gone to the extremes of burning physical disks and also backing stuff up on jump/thumb drives.

No, I'd never go buy porn in a store.
I'd never buy a porn game on steam, where it will be in my library for eternity and where it'll show on the "recently played" either.

Nah, just Totino's Pizza Rolls
You do know you can hide all that from others?
Use a second steam account.
Set everything to private and hide it.

Imagine you are in an adult store. You see a DVD with a completed Daz3d / Ren'py game. The screenshots as well as the description of the story, gameplay and included fetishes seem to be exactly what you like in games. The game seems to be fairly new and you don't remember seeing it here.

Would you buy it? How much would you pay for it?
It heavily depends, if it is something i know i will like and i want to support the dev like a finished version of teaching feeling or a Yandere themed romance game like Crimson gray Hell i own the censored version of crimson gray on steam then i would be willing to pay a lot of money for it $80+ in support of the content i enjoy. if it is something that looks good and is advertised really well for my tastes like a "30+ ending high choice yandere dating sim" then i would pay like 30-40 even if i didn't know the game personally. if the game's quality looks questionable at best like 95% of the games on this site then i would pirate it see if i like it then decide to buy the game or not later. but i am mostly talking from a "buy it on steam legally" perspective i hate consoles the last time i used one was to play persona 5 because it is console only, and i don't go into a store to buy any game much less a hentai game. but when hentai games are finished and put on steam for full price i am more likely to spend money on them because steam is easy and i like achievements.

If i deem something worth my money i'd buy it, but more likely in an electronic store such as steam.

Mine have either been directly from the company or through 3rd parties on Ebay for example, as for price it all depended on the going rate at the time. I do not remember buying anything Daz3d/Ren'py related.

I would totally buy a finished working game that is on renpy and have daz3d character render in it, if it's system requirements isn't that crazy and I can run it on my rig. I would totally forked up to 20$, depends if it really really good one of a kind that I really really wanted, I can forked up to $ 50 , but after that I don't buy anything game related for that year.

A totally completely polished game that is able to work and there are no bugs, no annoying error messages that will appear "error, ignore or rollback" yeah that is the one pain in renpy game that I never forget espcially if you paid for a complete game and the shit come up like that.

So you think their romantic fantasy mateiral is in some way different from your taste in porn?

Nor do you or I read a hentai manga and suddenly want to recreate everything in that. When it comes to hentai, I appreciate loli. I don't find real little girls attractive, and the more the artist tries to make the anime little girls look like real little girls the less I like it. In hentai I appreciate Femdom, but that doesn't work for me IRL, I'm not really a switch, I like domination, and I can be equal, but I'm not the submissive type, however, I think I could probably be with a Dom who was comfortable with us swinging with subs. Again, just because I read something doesn't mean I'm going to like it, but as a human being, I have the ability to understand why someone else might, and can accept that.

Yes, but just because you're into it in porn doesn't mean you have to have it in real life. Plain and simple.

Speculative bullshit, putting women on a pedestal. They are naturally MORE depraved than we are. There have been studies done. A woman whether she's into bestiality or not, will get aroused watching bonobos fucking. Now, yes, not every woman is going to understand every fetish. But you might not understand all of hers. Maybe she has a fantasy of getting gangraped by people close to you, say, your boss, best friend, and father? Would that be something you immediately understand or something you'd have to process through and come to accept that it's just a fantasy?

And that addresses my main point through most of this post Futa is a complete fantasy, yet you worry that someone will no longer be able to love you if they find out you're attracted to the unicorn of sex. You're worried that your fantasies of seeing women with dogs or horses or whatever are gonna make a person who loves you suddenly hate you. And that leads to this last point...

Then that relationship is already doomed. A person who would leave you because of that would leave you because of less. What you find erotic and get off to in porn doesn't have to be what your partner does in the bedroom, and they know that, as apparently, do you, since you mentioned that just reading 50 shades doesn't mean she's all of the sudden gonna be a sub, though it is a fact that the novels did really open up the idea to many a woman. What I don't understand is why you would risk everything, your relationship, your financial security, your potential children, to keep a secret like that from a woman who proclaims to love you. If they can't love you if they know you fap to dogs fucking futa chicks as they ram their cocks up a horse's vagina making them pregnant so that they give birth to a futa centaur, then they probably don't really love you.
True love is something hard to find and the fear is real, but I personally am here just to say: You are based.
